Tire question: Is 26 x 1 3/8 the same as 26 x 1.4?

I need new tires for my old three-speed "errand" bike (with a big handlebar basket). But tire sizes are confusing. My old bike uses 26 x 1 3/8 tires, and I see some nice 26 x 1.4 tires with reflective sidewall and a decent price. Are these sizes interchangeable?

Thanks much.

Fractional tire sizes are different than decimal sizes... PoliticAverse Apr 2012 #1

26x1.4" will work just fine, as long as the tire still clears the bike frame. n/t PavePusher Apr 2012 #3

You need 26 x 1 3/8 tires.

Please see this complete sizing guide for more info: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

Some example tires:

http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/tires/590.html

Note under the new ISO system the tire you are looking for would be called size 37-590.

Harris is very good about helping one with a purchase. I'm in Washington state, but I buy tires and other parts from them because of the great service.
