got a ranger 4x4. prolly never use that coz in live in FL. got a traction question.

drove the Santiam Pass in a snow storm in my 2WD Ranger. i was nervous but i lived.

say i'm caught in a snow fall in the 4x4, how would getting into 4WD improve the traction even if it's just regular road tires?

1. It's amazing the difference

You are activating the front wheels for more traction. The weight of the engine adds to that front wheel traction. You can go real good but stopping on snow and ice is tricky. The 4 wheel drive does nothing for that. 4 wheel drive is great.

Especially when it's anything other than dry out.

2. I live in Florida also - and have a 4X4

I have used it several times - getting stuck in the sand on the driving beach - pulled right out once I put it in 4W drive

4. Tires

I know this is an old thread, but I would like to ask whether the thread starter solved his question. I my self-has is also having some problems whether what tires to use. Right now I'm using a set of interco tires regular tires.

It is fine to use 4x4 when the wheels don't have full traction due to snow and other road condition.
