How to put 14 gallons in a 12 gallon tank...
I've got a new Chevy Cruze Eco that's doing great so far. But, it has, for some odd reason relating to formulae for Federal gas mileage stats, a 12 gallon gas tank rather than the usual Cruze 16 gallon tank.
So I'm filling it up and topping it off when it starts overflowing and I see the pump saying 14.6 gallons. Oops! I thought I had about 2 gallons in there already and there was no way several gallons sprayed out.
Then I notice the gas gauge stopped working. It was on Sunday, so no dealers were open and Onstar seemed to be of little help so I found a bunch of Cruze blogs. It seems both versions of the Cruze use the same gas tank, but the Eco has some extra baffling in there and a larger fuel pump assembly to keep the volume down. Some owners, for whatever reason, spend a half hour or so dribbling gas down the pipe getting the full 16 gallons in there but I found a faster way that I don't advise.
Anyway, the blogs said that the fuel sending unit was stuck, and until I got down to 10 gallons or so it wouldn't move, but then it would be fine. Everything else worked OK, so I waited and after driving about 250 miles the gauge started moving again.
OK, that was a little boring, but it was weird. Kinda makes me wonder just which of the myriad computers in this thing will blow the day after the warranty runs out.
