American ice hockey player Adam Johnson has died following a “freak accident” on the ice as he played for English side Nottingham Panthers, the team said in a statement.

In the second period of the team’s Challenge Cup match against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, Johnson appeared to suffer a serious neck injury after colliding with a Sheffield player.

Westin Michaud posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, after Steelers defenceman Matt Petgrave was the target of online abuse following the fatal collision in a Challenge Cup game between the two teams on Saturday, October 28.

was slowed down substantially. I saw it. In real time, the whole event took a matter of a couple of seconds. It happened so quickly, there's no way Petgrave had time to even think about kicking Johnson. I'll also point out that Petgrave is black. If he was white, I doubt we'd be hearing from most of these people. Most of this shit is coming from the right-wing social media cesspool.
