U.S. women win sixth world team title

Publication date : 30/10/2018

Olympic champion Simone Biles led the American women to their sixth world team title Tuesday at the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Doha (QAT), taking gold by nearly 9 points ahead of silver medallists Russia and bronze medallists China.

All three medal-winning teams also clinched team qualification for Tokyo 2020. The competition marks the first time since 1974 that teams have been able to secure Olympic qualification as early as two years before the next Olympic Games. Other nations will have further qualification chances in 2019. (Click here for more on the 2020 Olympic qualification process and refer to the applicable rules.)

Biles anchored the U.S. squad on all four events, turning in the highest scores of the day on Vault (15.500), Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise (14.766) as she and her teammates romped to their fourth consecutive team title since 2011 and sixth team title overall since 2003. The U.S. had small mistakes from Biles, who uncharacteristically grabbed the Balance Beam on her piked front, and world champion Morgan Hurd, who landed low on her double pike dismount on Floor. World debutante Kara Eaker, who qualified to the Balance Beam final, had the highest score of the day on her best event (14.333) to help the American team post an untouchable 171.629, nearly 9 points ahead of Russia.
