*i think Betts would have caught the ball. He's that outstanding.
Heres ---- -------. He was the fan who was ruled to have interfered with the Astros potential home run ball. Im going to need security to escort me out of here if the Astros dont come back to win this.

(12,160 posts)the fan prevented his beloved Cubs from recording a Marlins out instead of notching a home run for the home team.
This Astros fan better be ready to go into the witness protection program.
P.S. What is with the "Reagan-Bush '84" hat? Sheesh.

(52,273 posts)i'm not a fan of either team (if i watch sports at all, it's to see great athletic performances, i don't care about the teams).
but it seems pretty obvious that the fan closed the glove, that the ball was otherwise headed pretty neatly into the glove, and that the whole action took place inside the field of play (notice the glove does not come back toward the field of play, it stays essentially still, while the rest of the fielder's body moves on and then slams into the wall, with the glove arm leaning back toward the field of play, not extended out of it).
i agree with the call and think it's clear that without the fan interference it would have been an out anyway.

(182,848 posts)It was an ex-player who also coached at Houston. I don't remember his name. He said the rule is that if the fan reaches over the fence it's interference regardless if they touch the ball or the player. He said that was a specific ruling they got in Houston because of how close these seats are. He also said, look at the guy in the white shirt. It's clear he's reaching in so if either of the other two guy's hands are equal or ahead of the guy in white then it's clearly interference.

(65,106 posts)Because i heard him say that. And per the letter of the law, i buy that. I did not hear him say, that he thought Betts was going to catch it. What i heard is him say we don't know if Mookie catches it or not, but it was clearly interference.
Where we differ most, is that i don't think Betts was going to catch that ball fans or not.

(182,848 posts)From what I saw of Mookie he could go get one at the hot dog stand AND gun someone out at second.

(65,106 posts)But the 2 angles i saw make me think he wasn't going to catch it. Doesn't mean i'm right, just an opinion.

pays for a ticket and goes to the game or watches it on TV to see a fan interfere w/the
game.

(2,191 posts)Two of the fans definitely hit Betts's hand and glove. But they're allowed to do that in the stands. They just can't go over the wall into the field of play. It's very hard to tell if Betts's glove was over into the stands, or if the fans were reaching over into the field.
These pictures actually make it a closer call than I thought last night (the video made it seem to me like Mookie's glove was over into the stands; these pictures make it seem like maybe it wasn't, because the rest of his body is some distance from the wall). Without a definitive side angle, it's just hard to be sure. I saw a later shot from the TBS camera; its view was blocked by a security guard leaning over to see the play.
Still, there was plenty of time for the Astros to recover. They would have won if not for Benintendi's amazing catch in the bottom of the ninth.

(52,273 posts)the glove is essentially frozen in place as the rest of the fielder's body continues to move and then slam into the wall.
when he hits the wall, his arm is glove arm is clearly extended back into the field of play (again, without the glove having moved).
seems clear that the would-be catch had to have happened within the field of play.

(182,848 posts)Mookie throwing the guy out at second was too. He did something like that in the Yankee series (I think) but didn't quite get th runner scrambling back to first.
See my post above on the ESPN analysis.

(65,106 posts)As i said to UP above, i agree that Mookie is incredible and i don't think he would have caught the ball.
But technically, those fans interfered so that disagreement doesn't really matter.
