Manfred Fines Red Sox Over Stealing Signs and Issues Warning to All 30 Teams
By BILLY WITZ SEPT. 15, 2017
The sign-stealing confrontation between the Yankees and the Red Sox came to an apparent conclusion on Friday when Rob Manfred, the commissioner of Major League Baseball, fined the Boston team an undisclosed amount but chose not to hit it with more forceful penalties for using an Apple Watch to try to swipe signals from Yankees catchers.
Manfred used the announcement of the penalty to also issue a reminder to every major league team that the use of electronic devices to steal signs during games is prohibited, although he acknowledged that it is increasingly difficult to police such activities when all clubhouses are now outfitted with sophisticated replay equipment.
All 30 clubs have been notified that future violations of this type will be subject to more serious sanctions, including the possible loss of draft picks,
Manfred said in a statement.
Major League Baseballs sign-stealing inquiry began several weeks ago, after Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman filed a detailed complaint with Manfreds office that included video the Yankees shot of the Red Sox dugout during a three-game series between the teams in Fenway Park in August.
