Duke reportedly banned from wearing team gear after Coach K calls meeting

Duke is reeling, now at 3-4 in ACC play following Monday's home loss to NC State. According to ESPN, Mike Krzyzewski, sidelined since undergoing back surgery in early January, has contacted the team about their struggles and stripped them of some privileges that come with being a Duke basketball player.

ESPN's Jeff Goodman is reporting that Coach K called a team meeting at his house on Tuesday night where he informed the group that they have been "temporarily" kicked out of the locker room and forbidden from wearing Duke apparel "until they start living up to the standards of the program."

"I can't speak on it. It's pretty disappointing when stuff that happens within a locker room gets out like that. I don't know who the source is or where the source is coming from, but it's disappointing that stuff gets out like that," Jeff Capel, associate head coach and currently the sitting head coach, told WRALSportsFan on Thursday, noting that Coach K used similar tactics as a motivational tool during his freshman season as a player in Durham.

The meeting and new penalties come after Duke lost to NC State at home for the first time since 1995. While some of the team's struggles can be explained by a fluctuation in personnel and lineups, the team, as a whole, has fallen well short of its potential. The Blue Devils have given away leads in the second half and struggled for long stretches on defense, with all of it culminating in that embarrassing loss to the Wolfpack on Monday night.

3. Coach K Fan, But

I am a coach K fan, but I wish he would have done something like this to Grayson Allen when he was tripping people. Yes, Allen was eventually suspended, but how many times was he allowed to trip opposing players before he was suspended? Coach K will take away their right to wear Duke gear if they lose too much, or if they lose to the wrong team, but apparently he will not take away their right to wear Duke gear for poor sportsmanship.
