Rookies go from NCAA in March to the Summer League in June which Simmons starred in, then offseason training and drills, training camp and preseason where rookies recieve significant playing time. I imagine there was a lot of stress on that foot/ankle.

He and the Sixers will be alright, unlikely he would have turned them into a contender this season.
