On Monday, we relayed some of the finer moments behind Jeremy Lin's first extended run as point guard of the New York Knicks, complete with a reference in the title to that most-New York of all bands (Bowery excluded), Steely Dan. Now, we find out that Lin appears to be living a pretty New York City'ish existence. Stuck in the boroughs and wondering if he'll make it the year on an unguaranteed contract, without having to sign a lease, the guy has been living on his brother's couch for months. It likely has nothing to do with any sort of financial worries or comfort amongst family after a road trip brings him home just hours before sunrise -- Lin just probably can't find a better place. It's New York City, after all.
The New York Times' Howard Beck relayed that tidbit recently:
His contract, potentially worth nearly $800,000, was not even guaranteed until Tuesday afternoon. So for the past six weeks, Lin, 23, has been sleeping in his brother Josh's living room, waiting for clarity and career security.
"He has his own couch," Josh Lin, a New York University dental student, said cheerfully.
"His own couch"? I don't care if he starts at point guard for the New York dab-nabbin' Knicks. That's a showoff move in the world of Lower East Side real estate. Come on, Jeremy. With your couch. And your bad self.
Lin has played quite well since Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni handed the second-year guard extended minutes, averaging 26.5 points, 7.5 assists, two steals, and (erm) 4.5 turnovers a game in the Knick wins over New Jersey and Utah. But it's obvious that, at this point, he's just showing off. To be able to secure a couch of his own in New York City? That's insanity. Liza Minnelli had to wait decades before getting her own Trundle Bed (and that was only after Peter Allen put in a good word for her). Frank Sinatra couldn't even get a cot until after "From Here to Eternity" came out, and none of The Ramones ever owned pillows.

(17,086 posts)I just saw the clips on First Take this morning.
And I realized I screwed up - the other team was the Hornets, not Bobcats.

(78,249 posts)He is a Christian, vocal in his belief. And because of this and because he is a flawed player proving the experts wrong, people are comparing him to Tim Tebow. And everything was swirling out of control in the Verizon Center: Fans holding signs with Bible verses; fans calling his name; the son of Wizards coach Randy Wittman, a former player at Cornell, texting his father to say his Cornell teammates did a better job of guarding Lin at Harvard than Washington's millionaire NBA players.
Lin might have been anonymous a week ago, but at least he had a firm grasp of his name. Now because of three basketball games it has been tossed into the swirling sea of public consumption.
"Part of me is worried about the Tebow comparison," said Lin's college friend and former Bible Study partner, Eddie Lee, who stood outside the Knicks locker room as a crowd swelled in the hallway. "I hope the media doesn't take that and turn it into something."

Yup.
Just like at work....Topics off the table are Politics AND RELIGION.
Any and all beliefs...go to church, go to temple, go no where...but I don't want to have it in my face. Your beliefs are yours and mine are mine...great.
Now go play the games.

(287 posts)"Actually a lot of inspiration just because [Tebow's] such a polarizing figure but I think the things he says in interviews, his approach to the game is just unbelievable and I respect him so much. I want to be able to do some of the things that he does in terms of the amount of charity work and the non-profit work, and the way he impacts people off the field. I think that is what is most inspiring to me about him."

(18,791 posts)I popped into the Sports area (and I'm surprised not to see a Basketball sub group) to see if there were any Lin posts.
I'm not a cronic watcher and most certainly don't know all but was thrilled to see Lin play whoop-ass on the Lakers (and hell, I live in LA!)...take that Lakers and "King" Buss.
It was amazing...So today, I do the Wikipedia on his history. Good thing that he's young...the bounce-around history would have me giving the NBA the finger and looking for that job in economics.
I say GO MAN GO! Impressive and we need to see some new, energetic and IMPRESSIVE in the league.
p.s....speaking of those that get bounced around...poor Mike Bibby...how many teams has he been on?
