Philippines' Pacquiao apologises for comparing gays to animals

https://sports.yahoo.com/news/boxing-champion-pacquiao-says-gay-couples-worse-animals-074407196.html

Eight-time world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao apologised on Tuesday for describing homosexuals as "worse than animals" after his remarks sparked a firestorm of criticism in his native Philippines.

Nearing the end of a glorious decades-long boxing career, the 37-year-old is reinventing himself as a conservative Bible-bearing politician before the country's May elections, when he is running for a senate seat....

Pacquiao told television station TV5 earlier this week: "It's common sense. Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female."

"If men mate with men and women mate with women, they are worse than animals."

Actually, Manny, I did see our two female cats going at it once. And both had been spayed.

I have to assume he's assured himself that Timothy Bradley is hetero. Years ago, Kid Paret called his opponent, Emile Griffith, "maricon" (a homophobic slur en espanol) in the ring. An enraged Griffith proceeded to knock Paret out so hard that he later died of his injuries.

Nike drops Manny Pacquiao after derogatory comments toward gays

Nike announced it has dropped Manny Pacquiao in the wake of the boxer's controversial remarks where he said those in gay relationships "are worse than animals."

"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent," Nike said Wednesday in a statement. "Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community."

Pacquiao, 37, made the incendiary comments in a television interview that ran Monday in his native Philippines. He's currently a member of the House of Representatives and is running for the country's senate.

Pacquiao didn't immediately back down hours after the interview aired. Pacquiao said on his Facebook page he was "just telling the truth of what the Bible says."

. . .that catholics don't do the old testament. While i fell away at warp 9 between grade school and high school, i was an altar boy at the cathedral school, went to grades 1 through 12 at catholic schools, and if he's doing "bible" he needs to only pay attention to the second half.

I read this whole incident as nothing but Pacquiao pandering to his macho 'He-man' base and the bible stuff was just a convenient, albeit, lame excuse for legitimacy.

Still, if he's going to use religion this way, he should know that his own religion doesn't base much of anything on the books he's referencing.
