At 83, Mr. Hockey is still in demand and on the move. Gordie Howe is about to embark on another series of fundraisers to support dementia research.
It's a personal cause. The disease killed his wife, Colleen, in 2009 and is beginning to affect him.
"He's a little bit worse than last year, but pretty close to about the same," son Marty said. "He just loses a little bit more, grasping for words.
"The worst part of this disease is there's nothing you can do about it."

***On a personal note, Mr. Howe and his wife Colleen did their business at a bank where I worked. Unfailingly they brought in treats at Christmas and just because. When my daughter had her second birthday he brought in a teddy bear for her. I was just a lowly bank teller at the time. His kindness and enthusiasm for the city of Detroit and its people knows no bounds. I was so sad to read this today.

One of the greats of the game. I really hate this disease. It's slowly taking my Mother-in-law. It took my Grandmother. I pray for him and his family

I remember eating and drinking at Gordie's restaurant back in the 83 &84. in Glastonbury, CT. That was when he was playing for the Hartford Whalers.

(68,918 posts)7. He played his very last game at the age of 69, with the Detroit Vipers.
In 1997, he signed a contract for one game, and played one shift. He could then say that he played in 6 different decades.
