Cal win over Grambling State might not count toward bowl

http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_29161867/report-cal-win-over-grambling-state-might-not

Will the Cal football team face Arizona State in its regular-season finale Saturday night still unsure it has met eligibility to play in a bowl game?...

At issue is whether Grambling State -- Cal's season-opening opponent and a Football Championship Subdivision program -- meets the requirements to be counted as one of the six wins the Bears need to qualify for a bowl game.

Cal is confident that the matter will not derail its expectation of playing in a bowl game for the first time since 2011. A spokesman said Cal hopes to hear back from Grambling State with some resolution as early as Wednesday....

FCS schools are permitted to give 63 football scholarships. They must meet 90 percent of that standard to qualify as a game that will register toward the six-win threshold for FBS teams to gain bowl eligibility. According to Cal spokesman Wes Mallette, Grambling said it's at 89 percent.

I wouldn't worry too much if I were Cal, though. There will be a record 41 bowl games played this season, yielding 82 slots. There likely will not be 82 6-win teams. One would think that even without the waiver, Cal would be at the top of the 5-win list. Then again, anything is possible with the NCAA.
