Niners bench Colin Kaepernick; Blaine Gabbert to start

Three years after leading the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII, Colin Kaepernick has been benched in favor of a quarterback with a 5-22 record as an NFL starter.

The 49ers have informed Kaepernick that former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert will start versus the Atlanta Falcons this week, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, via a source informed of the situation.

He's never going to be a good passer...one would think they would try and go back to that before pulling the plug...I mean, it's not like they'll end up winning with Gabbert.

He's due $11.9 million next year. If the 49ers release or trade him before April they sever all financial ties. I bet he's gone.

I think they are benching him to prevent the injury guarantee in his contract from kicking in.

Never heard of that. I'd assume the regular contract would pay him if he was hurt up until a point in which that contract ended. Can an injury guarantee extend pass the current contract season?

Kaepernick bet on himself and lost. Dude let Jim Harbaugh blow smoke up his ass instead of finding a competent agent; Kaepernick signed his bombastic contract before Harbaugh's departure.

In addition, the contract contains a de-escalator clause that requires Kaepernick to be named to the Associated Press’ first or second All-Pro team, or play 80 percent of the snaps with the 49ers going to the Super Bowl to make the full amount. Since neither of those things is likely to happen this season, that means that Kaepernick will miss on $2 million next season. Kaepernick bet on himself by taking the deal, and at least for now, that looks like a mistake. - Ann Killion
