Nationals make deal for Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon

(espn.com)

The Washington Nationals have acquired closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Philadelphia Phillies, according to multiple reports.

Philadelphia will receive Double-A pitcher Nick Pivetta in exchange for Papelbon, according to the reports.

Papelbon has publicly stated that he would not waive his no-trade clause to join a team where he would not be the closer.

According to the reports, the Nationals will demote closer Drew Storen.

Giants might be able to make it through the playoffs with a starting combo of Bumgarner, Heston, Cain and Peavy, with starters Hudson and Vogelsong coming in for long relief if needed. Cain starts tonight vs the Brewers -- I think major trade decisions could hinge on how he pitches.

SF has the minor league talent to swing a trade. Question is if they mortgage the future.
