Sandoval puts personal glory ahead of team

http://www.csnne.com/boston-red-sox/sandoval-puts-personal-glory-ahead-team

In the seventh inning Monday night, with the Red Sox trailing 4-0, Sandoval hit a double to center and upon arriving at second base, pumped his fist furiously. He then got the attention of Atlanta shortstop Andrelton Simmons and communicated that he wanted the ball as a keepsake for a personal milestone: career double 200....

Here were the Red Sox, about to drop their seventh game in a row, down by four runs, and Sandoval seemed fixated on collecting an in-game souvenir for a personal achievement.

Again, perhaps on another day, at another time, no one would have given this a second thought. To be fair, players often are notified by a team's PR staff about pending milestones, so that they're made aware.

But optics count these days. These Red Sox are, you may have noticed, not terribly well liked by the fan base these days. And demonstrations like the one put on by Sandoval Monday night only reinforce the perception that the current team cares more about personal glory than collective accomplishment.

Hell, the Sox should probably have a party for anyone who hits a double. hughee99 Jun 2015 #3
Hitting the double certainly didn't hurt the team JonLP24 Jun 2015 #4

They signed Crawford for more, for a longer period of time and he was less productive. We had to ship off Adrian Gonzalez just to get rid of him (and Beckett).

Probably Crawford was worse, they gave him so much because of "potential" alone whereas Panda has actually proven himself...as for Gonzalez and Becker, they were both good for a while, but neither gave a shit...good riddance.

he's not selective enough at the plate to carry a team. He can be a valuable contributor though. There's no way the Giants win two of those World Series without him.

And he wasn't what they needed...they needed pitching and they did squat during the off-season.

I don't have an issue with this. I have a problem with the hitters that aren't hitting and the pitchers that can't get anyone out. Panda's been far from our biggest problem this year.

I'm not a fan so not a big deal to me but its a long season, these individual things are normal.
