Tatyana McFadden Falls From Her Wheelchair but Recovers for Victory

As God is my witness, my goal is to turn this into the wheelchair sports forum!

Late in her final push through Central Park in the women’s wheelchair race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, Tatyana McFadden felt her herself begin to tip. She was falling, literally, and the hopeless sensation of imbalance gave way to waves of panic.

“That was my fault,” McFadden said later, smiling sheepishly. “It’s a very tight turn, and I just took the wrong line and fell out of my wheelchair. I quickly had to get back in. I think I hit a bike. It was quite embarrassing.”

Embarrassing, but not disastrous. McFadden scrambled back into her seat and regained her astounding pace to win in 1 hour 42 minutes 16 seconds and claim her second consecutive New York City Marathon by more than a minute over Manuela Schar of Switzerland.

“That’s an absolute testament to the athlete that Tatyana is,” said Kurt Fearnley, the winner of the men’s wheelchair race by one second. “There is no more dominant female athlete in the sport at this moment.”
