Kansas Jayhawks fire Charlie Weis

Kansas has fired Charlie Weis four games into his third season at the school, the Jayhawks and athletic director Sheahon Zenger announced Sunday morning.

Defensive coordinator Clint Bowen has been named interim coach.

"I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season," Zenger said in a statement. "But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away.

"I appreciate what Coach Weis did with several facets of our football program. But we have not made the on-the-field progress we believe we should. I believe new leadership gives our coaches and players the best chance to make a fresh start."

Weis's Jayhawks lost 23-0 to visiting Texas Saturday, dropping Weis's record at Kansas to 6-22 overall and 1-18 vs. the Big 12.

Weis pitch to recruits: Have you seen that pile of crap out there?

How does Charlie Weis get recruits to consider coming to Kansas? He doesn't sugarcoat things, that's for sure. Check out his unvarnished response to a reporter's question at Big 12 media days regarding what he says to potential prospects.

"Have you seen that pile of crap out there?" Weis asked. "If you don't think you can play here, where do you think you can play?"

The Jayhawks went 1-11 in Weis' first season as head coach, so he has a point. His statement is a crafty way of implying that he inherited a lousy roster and that the dismal record was not reflective of his coaching ability. Plus, many recruits want to know whether they'll have a chance to play right away and Weis is smart to let them know that.

However, it's not the first time he's said something that could be perceived as him throwing his team under the bus. His blunt, deprecating style might make the media happy, but it probably doesn't go over well with his players.

Mark Mangino was paid $3 million as part of his confidential settlement to resign in 2009, Lew Perkins received $2.7 million upon his 2010 retirement as athletic director, Turner Gill was paid $6 million for the final three years of his contract after he was fired in 2011, and Weis will make $5.625 million through 2016.

$22.5 million - Money the KU athletic department will pay Weis and Gill for four-plus seasons of coaching in which the KU footbal team is 11-44.

$25 million - Approximate total Weis will be paid by Notre Dame and Kansas not to coach. Notre Dame fired Weis in 2009 and reportedly will pay him $19 million as severance through Dec. 2015.
