Brazil's win over Colombia came at a high cost: Neymar.
The superstar playmaker suffered a broken vertebra late in the quarterfinal clash at Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza on Friday, according to multiple reports. Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed the injury and indicated that Neymar will miss the remainder of the 2014 World Cup.
In the 87th minute, Colombia's Juan Camilo Zuniga drove his right knee into Neymar's lower back while leaping to attempt to head the ball. The Brazil forward dropped to the field in pain after the contact. The 22-year-old star was soon loaded onto a stretcher and taken immediately down the tunnel away from the field.
Not long after the final whistle sounded on Brazil's 2-1 win, ESPN's post-game coverage returned to Fortaleza for a report from the commentators who had called the action.

(44,580 posts)...Zuniga jumped into the back of Neymar and his knee struck the Brazilian's third vertebra two minutes from the final whistle...(He) told reporters..."On the pitch I'm defending my shirt, my country, but I didn't expect him to fracture a vertebra. He is a great talent for Brazil and for the world...
"It's a normal action, I tried to shadow him...I was not thinking of hurting him. I was defending my country's colours..."
Neymar...will be out for several weeks, team doctors said.

(81,882 posts)The game has been robbed of one of its talents by a guy that no one will remember. That foul was in the 87th minute and went unpunished (possibly because of advantage). It's a shame that Brazil will not meet their full potential.
