UT beats A&M in rubber match
HOUSTON When roughly half of Reckling Park and the entire Texas dugout erupted in delight, an ecstatic Longhorns starter Chad Hollingsworth turned and fired his glove toward a wave of teammates rushing his way.
Hollingsworth's happy toss of the leather into the grass proved to be his most unbalanced pitch Monday night because his previous 128 had absolutely kept an old archrival off-balance for nine innings.
UT, behind Hollingsworth's brilliant two-hitter, defeated Texas A&M 4-1 in the Houston Regional title game of the NCAA tournament before a stadium-record 6,825 fans.
The victory advanced the Longhorns into a super regional against fellow No. 2-seed Houston. The Cougars upset top-seeded LSU in the Baton Rouge Regional final. The host of the super regional will be announced Tuesday morning.
Give Texas credit, they played better than we did, A&M coach Rob Childress said. And it all started and ended on the mound with Chad Hollingsworth.
