Mavericks owner Mark Cuban: NFL is 10 years from imploding

Mark Cuban has always enjoyed wielding a sharp stick. Even when he’s poking the NFL.

The Dallas Mavericks’ owner said Sunday evening that he believes the NFL is 10 years from imploding. He’s a firm believer that even the strongest pro sports league in the world can suffer from over-saturation.

“When pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered,” Cuban said. “And they’re getting hoggy. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I’m just telling you, when you got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns against you.”

The NFL’s move to Thursday night was one thing. But now the league will have at least two Saturday games and there is speculation that there will be Wednesday NFL action as well. That’s a recipe for disaster, Cuban believes.

Cuban is onto something, but I don't think it's the oversaturation that will do football in hughee99 Mar 2014 #1

in the long run. It will be the injuries. Even if a new technology comes along to largely prevent the concussions, will that technology be affordable enough that it can be implemented at the high school level and below? And if schools can't afford the liability OR the equipment necessary to play a sport, they'll drop it, no matter how much the kids say they want it. Even now, I'm seeing kids who don't want to play tackle football NOT because they don't like football, but because if they get a concussion, they could miss basketball AND baseball season as well, and they don't like it THAT much.

I think that we will be less likely to see tackle football in the middle school ranks and possibly it could be eliminated for high schools. However, I think that the money is to much for an incentive to be eliminated in the college ranks. That would mean that the NFL could continue; however, the quality of play will diminish. The question then becomes whether the pro game will draw the crowds if the quality is comparable to what is currently in the college ranks.

The once a week aspect made it special. Monday Night Football used to be special. Now with all the games on different nights the luster is dulled. To the point that unless my team is playing, I just don't care much anymore.

They are shooting themselves in the foot with the oversaturation.
