Following a fruitful two-year relationship, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has parted ways with coach Ivan Lendl the man who turned him from a four-time Grand Slam runner-up into a two-time major champion.
Murray and Lendl announced their decision on the British player's blog on Wednesday, a few days after Murray lost in the fourth round at Indian Wells.
"I'm eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work over the past two years, the most successful of my career so far," said Murray, who returned from back surgery this season. "As a team, we've learned a lot and it will definitely be of benefit in the future. I'll take some time with the team to consider the next steps and how we progress from here."
With Lendl, Murray won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and the U.S. Open title later the same year. In 2013, he became the first British man to triumph at Wimbledon in 77 years.

(32,090 posts)but this about takes it. I guess he doesn't feel like winning again. Maybe he should just progress to retirement ...

(56,177 posts)He really didn't have it, the mental edge to get over the hump until he got Lendl....and he throws that away...stupid, stupid, stupid.

(16,113 posts)"Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience for me," Lendl said. "He is a first class guy. Having helped him achieve his goal of winning major titles, I feel like it is time for me to concentrate on some of my own projects moving forward including playing more events around the world which I am really enjoying."
From this, it sounds like maybe Lendl was ready to move on, though you can't really be sure one way or the other from this article. Lendl is a class-act and isn't going to through Murray under the bus even if he was fired.

(56,177 posts)That was implied in another article...that's why I say he was stupid...he didn't get over the hump until he got Ivan...stupid like Andy Roddick firing Brad Gilbert when Gilbert was the one he got him his one slam...and Roddick fires him shortly after.

(32,090 posts)they win one and think they can win them all afterwards. Incredibly short-sighted.
