Tony Dungy says Jim Irsay is 'making it personal' with Manning

<snip>

"Jim is making this personal," Dungy said in a text message to ESPN. "I'm surprised."

<snip>

In a recent interview with USA Today Sports, Irsay said he was "frustrated" that the Colts won only one Super Bowl despite reaching the playoffs 11 times with Manning.

Irsay also explained the Colts' decision to release Manning and draft Andrew Luck prior to last season, telling USA Today, "We've changed our model a little bit, because we wanted more than one (Super Bowl ring)."

Dungy thinks Irsay was deliberately trying to provoke the highly competitive Manning.

"I think that's what he's trying to do," Dungy told ESPN in a text message. "Have him make it such a big game he doesn't perform well. I can't figure any other reason to go this way."

Neither Manning nor Irsay could give two shits about the other or what the other is saying about them.

When I saw the story on Sports Center, the only guy who was all excited about it was the Sports Center guy.

Irsay was basically "That's not what I meant" and Manning was all "Whatever".

Looks like fourletternetwork looked around and finally found someone pissed off about it. So now they can push their negative "controversy" narrative for a game that was already chock full of positive hype.

Dumbshits.

If the Bears had anyone other than Grossman at QB they would have won that game. The Colts were begging them to take it and he kept shooting himself in the foot.

Irsay is right.

Everyone involved is an asshole.

5. Irsay should kiss the ring Peyton Manning won him

Without Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts would not have been relevant for more than a decade. Without Peyton Manning, the Colts would not have won 11 AFC South titles or produced 11 seasons with double-digit wins.

Without Peyton Manning, Lucas Oil Stadium would not have been built. Fans would not have eagerly bought season tickets or merchandise. Sponsors would not have devoted major dollars to supporting the team.

Without Peyton Manning, the Colts would not have won a Super Bowl or played in two. For 13 seasons, Manning was the franchise. He was the horseshoe. Manning is why people cared, why fans watched, why teams feared the Colts and why the franchise won.

Jim Irsay should kiss the ring Manning won for him and not bemoan the fact the Colts did not win more. He should respect the game, the process and how hard it is to win one championship. Plenty of other owners would kill for one ring. All Irsay needs to do is ask Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

That they got that ring in spite of Manning's play in that game. He stunk and certainly didn't deserve MVP. The only saving grace was that Grossman was worse.

Manning is the greatest regular season QB ever. No doubt that without him all of those things mentioned; the relevancy, the stadium and most importantly the money this dude has raked in wouldn't have been there.

He probably should be more grateful but like I said, he's an asshole.

It is understandable if he didn't play to his level as most QBs didn't when they played the Bears that year. He also needed a comeback victory over the Patriots just to get there.

. . .instead of putting nearly 70% of the salary cap on Peyton and the receivers all those years, they could have won more Super Bowls.

As it is, they didn't get that one ring until the 2006-7 season when they finally had a great defense and a great running game to go along with the passing.
