The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released quarterback Josh Freeman on Thursday, the team announced.
The Buccaneers tried to trade the quarterback but were unable to find a taker. The team expects that Freeman will claim his right to his full remaining salary of $6.2 million and be free to sign with any team in which he shares mutual interest, sourced told ESPN NFL Insider Ed Werder.
Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik contacted all 31 of the NFL's other teams in an attempt to trade Freeman, sources said.
While the initial plan was to retain Freeman until closer to the trade deadline in case another team suffered an injury at the position and Freeman became marketable, the organization decided to separate from Freeman because too much damage was being inflicted on coach Greg Schiano and the situation with one player was undermining the focus of the entire team, according to sources.

(29,322 posts)Schiano said to season ticket holders this morning this "situation needed Greg Schiano."
<snip>
If Raheem Morris had the franchise in the state of laughingstock, Schiano has it in the state of object of burning hatred and distrust. Fans and media members in Tampa Bay and across the nation have a generally negative perception of Schiano, and his comments to Bucs fans who pay a lot of money for the seats they sit in wont help his image.
If Schiano truly believes hes helped this franchise since hes arrived, hes sadly mistaken. Hes received a huge influx of talent over the last two seasons (although he says its impossible to load a roster in two seasons). And with that increase talent, he tripped and fell into a decent start to his first year.
But since the last part of his first season in Tampa Bay, hes led a team thats tied with Jacksonville for the worst record in the NFL over the last 10 weeks of play. Compare the rosters in Tampa Bay and Jacksonville, and there should be absolutely no reason for those teams to be mentioned in the same breath.
So if Schianos job was to come in and simply be better than Raheem Morris, its arguable that hes even reached that goal. Because Morris started stronger, and didnt lose the locker room until later in his tenure.

(1,508 posts)And that no team is going to touch him.
$6 million to walk away isn't bad though.

(29,322 posts)was someone leaked that he was in a Stage 1 of the substance-abuse program -- which is something they weren't supposed to do. The only mention of any substance I'm aware of came from Freeman who says he took Ritalin which triggered a positive result. He says he is prescribed Adderall for ADHD.

Either way, another team will certainly take him now that he's a free agent. He's 25 with significant starting experience in the league. The issue why no team would trade for him was the contract which is now no longer an issue. The Jaguars or my Cardinals would be smart to take a run at him.
