Air Force Academy game at Navy canceled because of government shutdown

Because of the government shutdown, travel to the Air Force Academy football game on Saturday at Navy has been canceled, the school announced Tuesday.

The release from Air Force states: At this time, travel for all intercollegiate athletics is cancelled - this includes the Air Force-Navy game on Saturday, 5 Oct.

According to the Navy athletics website, notification on Saturday's football game against Air Force "will be made public prior to 12 noon on Thursday." The Department of Defense has suspended all intercollegiate athletic competitions at the service academies.

Air Force said in the news release they will "attempt to play all home intercollegiate athletic contests but those may be cancelled, as well. Academy officials are working with Mountain West Conference officials, those teams the Falcons were scheduled to play and officials at The Department of the Air Force to make up as many games as possible."

Tell them all college and pro games where air-travel is required will be canceled due to air traffic control cutbacks and you'll have this all fixed in 5 minutes.

Army, Navy and Air Force may be playing football games this weekend, after all.

The service academies just need final approval by the Secretary of Defense, a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

The Defense Department temporarily had suspended sports competition at the service academies Tuesday as a result of the partial government shutdown stemming from the budget impasse in Congress. All schools involved have said that a decision would be made by noon Thursday.

"The games (Air Force at Navy, Army at Boston College) have been approved to be played by everyone at the service academies, even the lawyers," the source told McMurphy. "Everyone is in. All the boxes are checked, just waiting for approval by the Secretary of Defense, who has final say, which would make it official."
