IF "A-Rod" ends up losing all appeals of his suspension...

Would the Yankees have to forfeit any wins they get with him in the lineup during the appeals process?

How would that play out?

Also...given that they've been feuding with the guy and had sent him down to the minors, why don't the Yankees just save themselves the trouble and release A-Rod now?

They're pretty much out of contention for this year anyway.

I don't think so. hughee99 Aug 2013 #1
If they release him they'd probably have to pay his contract out. Angleae Aug 2013 #2
Yet he's playing now while under appeal. And, presumably, still getting paid. Ken Burch Aug 2013 #3

Other players have appealed suspensions for various reasons and I don't recall MLB ever forcing retroactive forfeits before. If they release him, I think they have to pay him his money, but if he's suspended, they don't. I think best-case scenario for Yankees management, based on what the yankees pay him and his performance over the last year or two, is that he gets a long suspension, either that or if they can get him to retire (which I don't think he'd ever do).

If he's suspended, it's without pay.

So it's hard to see where they gain, especially since their season, at this point, is a dead loss.

If he loses the appeal, will they sue him to recover the money?

If he plays, Yankees have to pay him. If he's released, Yankees have to pay him. If he's suspended, they don't. And from what I've heard it's about $100 million left on his contract. So they keep him on the roster until his appeals run out then cut him off completely.
