I teased him about being their most famous alum (I suggested they might let him do the graduation speech) after he got his picture in a local paper a few weeks ago and he told me about the Tour-de-France riders. I didn't quite remember the name of the school, though, so in all fairness, I did have to google it. The town name I remembered, though I've never been there. I wasn't that far off in my spelling.

If I understand right, it wasn't a 4 year school back in the 80's (when he was there).

Very much a fluke thing.

Probably the most painful thing I've ever experienced.

20+ stitches in my face.

The good news is that all the alcohol dulled any pain and made sure I didn't remember it.

with the course leading up to their mountain campus from a start at the Ocracoke tunnel.

Even if the Ocracoke tunnel existed, which it doesn't; would you really want a bunch of cyclists on the Bonner Bridge?

One gust of wind and they're either road-kill or fish-food.

Then there's getting from Manteo to Banner Elk. It's barely bearable in a car and I can't imagine biking it.

Hours and hours and hours of wasteland, til you get to Raleigh. Then it's unbearable sprawl, til about Wilkesboro.

Maybe.

There's plenty of old logging roads in the Swamp.

It would probably be the most pleasant part of the tour in eastern NC. At least it has shade.

Still way out of the way if you're going to Banner Elk though, unless you're a dumbass.

This year it's actually in three separate parts, with the teams flying between them!
