Months before an NFL opener, Michael Crabtrees season is in jeopardy.
The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver tore his Achilles tendon during organized team activities and will soon have surgery, USA Todays Mike Garafolo reports.
A torn Achilles used to be season-ending and often career-ending. But that has improved radically of late. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles in early May last year and returned to play Oct. 21.
Its extremely difficult, Suggs told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times after Kobe Bryant tore his. Its definitely one of the hardest things Ive had to endure in my life. But if youve got drive, youre not accepting what the worlds telling you, you can do it. But its definitely the hardest thing Ive ever done.
Crabtree, 25, had career bests with 85 receptions, 1,105 yards receiving and nine touchdowns last season. In the 49ers postseason run to the Super Bowl, he caught 20 passes for 285 yards and three TDs. He was the intended target as the 49ers were driving late in the game.
