Coach K Upset Blue Devils caught in fan surge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski expressed concern for his players' safety after the Blue Devils' upset loss to Virginia on Thursday.

Many in the first sellout crowd at Virginia this season stormed the court in celebration of the Cavaliers' 73-68 victory, leaving Duke's players and coaches to battle through the surge to get to their locker room.

"When we've lost in the last 20 years, everybody rushes the court," Krzyzewski said, as quoted by The Associated Press, insisting he was raising a concern but not trying to take away from Virginia's victory. "Whatever you're doing, you need to get the team off first. Celebrate, have fun, obviously you won. That's cool, but just get our team off the court and our coaching staff before students come on."

Duke has lost four games this season, each on the road -- defeats at North Carolina State, at Miami and at Maryland preceded Thursday's loss. Fans stormed the court at every venue.

Anyone think this is a safety issue? Have there ever been any injuries...or is this just Coach K trying to deflect attention away from his team's shitty performance?

Didn't the SEC ban the practice years ago? I think that there has been a decline in general civility over the years, and that doesn't help the situation any. The focus of too many is less on celebrating the victory and more on denigrating the opposition. Maybe the time has passed for this form of victory celebration.
