MLB reportedly gives A's outline for potential move

PHOENIX -- There appears to be some traction regarding the A's ongoing stadium situation, with the Los Angeles Times reporting on Thursday that Major League Baseball has provided the club with an outline for a potential move to San Jose.

Nothing is imminent, according to the report, and even the sheer existence of these guidelines doesn't guarantee a move will come. But if the A's can follow the instructions set forth by MLB, Commissioner Bud Selig would likely be inclined to let club owners decide whether to approve such a move.

The Giants, who hold territorial rights to San Jose as part of their hold over Santa Clara County, have opposed the A's proposed move there, and their ability to challenge it is not affected by discussions between the A's and MLB.

The A's would need 75 percent of the clubs to approve the move in order to rescind the territorial rights held by the Giants, who could put a halt to it all by lining up seven clubs to vote with them. They could also choose to sue to deter the project from advancing.

I like the A's and want them to stay in the Bay Area, but I can't see owners voting for such a move into Giants' territory. Selig is full of shit. Looks like delaying tactics to me.

It makes sense with a metro population of almost 2 million.

4. Yeah, but the problem will always be that it's Vegas.

No team wants to be the first one to move to the gambling capital of the world. Especially after Pete Rose.

But other than that, Las Vegas is perfectly big enough to host a Major League sports team. Oklahoma City would be a good candidate as well.

10. I don't think the problem is necessarily gambling

It's because there is so much shit to do in Vegas. A lot of pro owners don't want that much competition for the entertainment dollar.

Also there is the idea that casinos would buy up all the tickets so potential customers would have to come to the casino. Marlins President David Samson didn't mind that idea.

Samson also told the crowd about his early negotiations to move the Marlins to either San Antonio or Las Vegas while stadium discussions had stalled in Dade.

He says he took a meeting with Las Vegas's former mayor Oscar Goodman in a room full of four showgirls, and suggested that casinos would buy out all of team's tickets to ensure that no one left the strip to catch a ball game.

"We don't care if nobody comes," Samson said (Miami Today reports he had a smile on his face at the time). "We'll play in front of nobody, and we'll have all the money."

Also LV needs a state-of-the-art ballpark if they want a major pro team.

I know that pro baseball is a business, but I still just find it so messed up that Lew Wolff is still willing to move out of town even after all the support from the local fans over the years, and even just last year. That rich cheapskate doesn't want to pay for a stadium himself, so he wants the city of Oakland to do it even though we are already broke and many people here can't really afford to go to every game.

I'll tell you one thing--if the A's do move out of town, I will never support them ever again. I'll quit going to their games for good, and I will burn all of my A's gear.

9. Maybe if the Warriors leave for San Francisco

a new baseball stadium could be built where the arena is. The Coliseum complex is ideally located and served by great public transit.
