Dave Hyde: Can NCAA give itself a death penalty?

Not sure if you all are paying attention with this story---but its a pretty huge scandal..... and it ain't the Hurricanes that are in the eye of the storm.

If you're a University of Miami fan, you're confident of one thing today.

The NCAA is as covered with Nevin Shapiro's stench as you are.

Maybe more. Its officials always flaunt toy badges and stand on the highest ground in the sewage plant they've built. Now they're being investigated for being so desperate in nailing Miami they broke their own rules.

Here's the short version of Wednesday's news: An NCAA investigator hired the attorney of Shapiro, the convicted Ponzi schemer and general scumbag, in order to receive information on his bankruptcy that pertained to Miami athletes.
And no one in the NCAA's administration was aware of it.

No, seriously. No one knew Shapiro's attorney was on the take — er, payroll — until expenses were paid out. That's what they say, anyhow. And that's what they floated publicly.

"To say the least, I am angered and saddened by this situation. Trust and credibility are essential to our regulatory tasks," Emmert said.

What he's saddened most by is the sham of an investigation has been exposed.

"Isn't NCAA making head coaches responsible for assistants' actions?" ESPN college analyst Jay Bilas tweeted. "Uh, Mr. Emmert, about this happening on your watch…"
