CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A backup running back angrily fired a football at the son of the running backs coach, triggering a practice melee Monday that involved about 20 players - including Tim Tebow -- at the New York Jets' training camp.
It started with rookie safety D'Anton Lynn and running back Joe McKnight, and it quickly escalated into a brawl that caused reporters to scatter and came dangerously close to fans.
Afterward, quarterback Mark Sanchez strongly denounced the behavior.
"There's no excuse for it," said Sanchez, noting that he watched from an "advantageous" position. "There's no throwing the ball at a teammate and there's no shoving a guy out of bounds into the signs. One, it doesn't look good. Two, it sends the wrong message to our team. We want to take care of our guys ... I don't like to see it."
McKnight caught a pass near the sideline and received a hard push from Lynn, whose father, Anthony, is McKnight's position coach. McKnight fired the ball at Lynn and came toward him, throwing a punch.

What a bunch of losers...even taking Timmeh to try and get good press didn't help you asshats.

(29,322 posts)is actually common around this type of year. Training camp+pre-season has players living & working together the whole time so someone gets sick of someone. I know the Cardinals players have gotten into it more than a few times.
The reason this is big news is because it's the Jets.

It took only about a minute to restore order...Tebow was one of the first players on the scene, trying to play the role of peacemaker. An angry Rex Ryan...barged into the melee and started pulling away players...Afterward, quarterback Mark Sanchez strongly denounced the behavior...
Such noble acts of leadership from both Tebow and Sanchez! But with the quarterback controversy that has been created, more turmoil is inevitable.

(56,177 posts)The took Timmeh just to get press, so now stuff like this will be magnified...good.

(44,576 posts)No one had ever mentioned the Jets as a candidate. But more to the point, it seemed to me suicidal at best, and sadistic at worst, to risk further destabilizing the team with an unnecessary quarterback controversy.
You think Sanchez is going to be happy with Tebow literally breathing down his neck? You think Tebow won't be able to resist generating fan sympathy for him? And whose side are their teammates supposed to be on?

(29,322 posts)there is a QB controversy. I think it's pretty clear Sanchez is the starter. I think the reason they got Tebow is because Rex Ryan likes to run the football. He used a QB who can run in the wildcat before--Brad Smith. The Jets hired Sporano who is known to use the wildcat. I think it's pretty clear the Jets plan to use Tebow as a wildcat QB.
That isn't to say there won't be a controversy in the future but I doubt it since Sanchez is clearly a better QB.

Or fewer.
With the fans complaining and Tebow and Sporano in the wings, the wildcat will begin to look like the biggest cure-all this side of penicillin!
If the Jets truly believe that the wildcat is the way to go, they should commit to making it work now, even if it means benching Sanchez. It doesn't sound like something that can work by alternating quarterbacks, and I haven't heard anything about Sanchez being taught to be a wildcat.

(56,177 posts)Sanchez believes he's the face of the franchise...I think the idiots in charge (Ryan) thought a "controversy" would be good for business and they really didn't think they'd have a controversy...gonna be a messy season at the bottom of their division.

A day after a 20-player throwdown highlighted a chippy practice, Ryan made his players run a series of sprints Tuesday as punishment for a few minor scuffles on the field....
...(F)or a team coming off a disappointing season that was derailed in large part by in-fighting by players in the locker room, Ryan has been determined to maintain control - something he has repeatedly acknowledged he didn't have last season...
But Rex, how do you maintain what you've never had?
