Curragh: Camelot stays unbeaten with Irish Derby victoryhttp://www.drf.com/news/curragh-camelot-stays-unbeaten-irish-derby-victory
Camelot won for the fifth time without a defeat and survived his first trip over a heavy, laboring course, with his win Saturday evening in the Irish Derby at the Curragh giving trainer Aidan OBrien his seventh straight victory in that Group 1 race.
Camelot, a winner in both his runs at 2, now has captured the English 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, and the Irish Derby at age 3. Saturday, closing from fourth in a five-horse field, he beat Born to Sea by two lengths after the runner up tracked him and briefly made him work to maintain a lead in the homestretch.
On a course labeled soft to heavy, Camelot and jockey Joseph OBrien galloped along with only Born to Sea behind him as stablemate Astrology made the pace, with Akeef Mofeed and Light Heavy following the leader. OBrien steered outside for clear sailing approaching the stretch run, and as Astrology dropped tamely away, Camelot moved to take command. Born to Sea went with him and, as both horses wandered about on the tiring turf, briefly cut into the lead about a furlong out, but Camelot held him clear and crossed the wire well in command. Winning time for the 1 1/2 miles was a slow 2:43.96. Imperial Monarch, the OBrien-trained second betting favorite, was scratched because of the wet conditions.

Mystical Star atoned for her previous misbehavior in the starting gate by breaking in a timely manner and turning back Aruna's stretch run to win Belmont Park's Grade 2, $200,000 New York for turf fillies and mares on Saturday.
2012 Triple Bend Handicap
Trainer Mike Mitchell, who had brain surgery a day earlier, surely got some much-needed tonic when his Camp Victory swept past odds-on favorite The Factor to post a convincing victory in the $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap (gr. I) at Betfair Hollywood Park June 30.
Camp Victory, sent off at odds of 10-1, was claimed by Mitchell in February 2011 for $40,000. The 5-year-old son of Forest Camp earned his first grade I victory for owners Gordon Jacobsen, Roger Featherston, and Tom and Lynne Miller.
A Mitchell family member said before the race that trainer had come through the surgery, in which a tumor was removed, in good shape. He was watching the race from the hospital with his wife Denise and his two daughters.
