Another pitcher who was a class act I like to ponder about when things get tough for me is Roger Craig. I'm not talking about the way he managed the Giants, but his nightmare 1963 season with the New York Mets. Craig lost a record 18 straight decisions, yet for the most part had good stuff. He lost a number of decisions in which he was on the hook in a low scoring game. Often he lost a game by a single, unearned run. Yet, no matter how discouraging that might have been, he went out and did his best every time he was called on to pitched. He brandished an ERA of 3.86 that season, which may not be a lot to write home about, but isn't something anyone would associate with losing 18 consecutive decisions, either.
