Can I get some recommendations for books for girls, ages 4-6?

I have a niece who asks me to read to her - and I thought, wouldn't it be nice if she had some age-appropriate reading for herself? She's an only child so I know she has a lot of time on her hands. She likes princesses and pretty sparkly stuff - girly-girl I guess - so any recs would be appreciated. Thanks!

BTW, I thought about The Little Prince, but that's more of a boy's book - we tried to get her to watch Dumbo with us, but we found out she had absolutely ZERO interest in it - and I guess that's because circuses and traveling and exotic animals are more of interest to boys.

"My First Little House Books"

County Fair (1997)
Christmas in the Big Woods (1995)
Dance at Grandpa's (1994)
The Deer in the Wood (1995)
A Farmer Boy Birthday (1998)
Going to Town (1995)
Going West (1996)
A Little House Birthday (1997)
A Little Prairie House
Prairie Day (1997)
Sugar Snow (1998)
Summertime in the Big Woods (1996)
Winter Days in the Big Woods (1994)
Winter on the Farm (1996)

I pulled up 'Christmas in the Big Woods' on Amazon and took a look inside choosing the surprise me choice.
Here's a link take a peek: http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Big-Woods-Little-House/dp/0064434877#_

All my grandchildren, both boys & girl LOVED everything Little House. Some had this series. Some had the original Little House series read to them. And some very much enjoyed the series on DVD along with their parents.

I would advise reading them in order by publishing date so the child can get to know the place & characters back story. Those little minds have a great memory.

I highly recommend this series. If you decide to try one of the books let me know if she liked it

edit to add: You couldn't get more girlie girl than my sparkle princess granddaughter and she loved these. It's worth a try. But maybe reading them to her at first, to pique her interest, might be the way to go.

It's a hoot.

I also think that you could simply read the regular Little House books, at least up to By the Shores of Silver Lake. I think that one would be a little intense for a very young child.

A lot of old classics are wonderful. The Velveteen Rabbit comes to mind. Also the three books by Virginia Lee Burton, The Little House, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Katie and the Big Snow.

i read three to my niece the other day at the library. yurtle the turtle... bird with a tale... and bear an rabbit bragging. thru out the story, we would discuss what was happening.

(i personally did not do books by gender at that age. the girls are always princess and i kinda stay away from those)

i had 100's, lol for kids when they were little and have them boxed up.
