Related: About this forumDoes anyone know how to get a recording of the Melissa Harris-Perry Show ...
from this (past) Saturday?
She did a segment that I work like to research further. One of her panelist drew a connection between the integration of public accommodations and the white flight from those public services (in favor of private services that were not covered under Title II of the CRA). The Panelist then pointed out the disinvestment in those services, because the (white) public no longer valued it as a service for them, and them alone. In the specific case, he was talking about publically owned swimming pools; but I think the same applies to public schooling ... as we see the rush to private schooling (charters, etc.), we are also seeing a disinvestment in public education.

(885 posts)if so, I might be able to get a source for you to DL but it's ready to watch there on MSNBC for the moment.
I also learned something new. Hulu plays cable highlights and apparently MHP is on their radar.
Same segment here.

(20,450 posts)It's not just a coincidence. I sent Chris Matthews an email thanking him for the segment he did last week on the racism in the Republican party and using their hatred for government as a proxy for that racism. Because the government used to be one of the best institutions for blacks and other minorities to get a good, sustainable job that paid well, the Republican party's obsession with anti-government sentiment is not just a mere coincidence. Policies that have nothing to do with race and were once considered politically-neutral are now somehow "racialized" is evidence of how Republicans have exploited racial hatred to their advantage.
Only now when the black guy occupies the White House at 1600 Pennsylania Avenue is unemployment insurance considered "welfare". Only now is Medicare somehow viewed as a "government handout" and social security is a "ponzy scheme". Republicans have long since targeted Medicare and social security but not with as much venom and vigor as they do now. And the food stamp program? They've villified people who receive assistance so much so that my fellow agency down the street from me (I work at HUD), USDA, had to change the name to something more innocuous: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. At HUD, we no longer use the term "Section 8 Vouchers"; it's now "Housing Choice Vouchers".
These people seethe with hatred. It's all they have. And anti-government sentiment is their weapon--even to the extent that minorities themselves who have achieved a level of economic success start to look down on their fellow man with disdain when those on the bottom end of the economic scale rely on public assistance of ANY kind.
Note: We here at HUD laugh at the hypocrisy because the biggest welfare program is the mortgage interest deduction. Homeowners did nothing special but own their home. And yet, they receive this huge deduction (i.e., handout) from taxpayers. I'm not knocking us homeowners; I'm just suggesting that it's interesting how some public assistance isn't considered "welfare" at all when it benefits the upper-income classes. Nobody complains about the millions of Americans who pursue FHA home mortgage loans. They are celebrated. But if you're using a housing choice "voucher"? Oh, you're considered the scum of the earth! Lazy beast!

(31,849 posts)The old time saying ... that I, and those of Color of my preceding generation, frequently heard early in my/our career (the early 80s) ... "Baby, why you want to work there? Better get you a job at the Post Office!", just didn't spring from nowhere. A family friend, graduated with Honors from college, in Industrial Engineering, and did just that ... got a job in the Post Office (in the early .
He was amazed at the number of People of Color (Black and Brown) with degrees, working next to high school drop-outs.
You work at HUD? I did a lot of work with HUD (on the national level) in the late 80s - mid-90s. Maybe we know some of the same folks.

(20,450 posts)until 2000. Unless some of those folks you know are still there--and they could very well be--I may not know them. Also, HUD is fairly large: between 6,000 and 8,000 at headquarters. This is much smaller than our friends over at USDA, HHS, Energy and DOT, but still a lot of people.
But you are right. In fact, most of my friends who work for the federal government have advanced degrees, including myself. The lie that has been perpetuated about public workers making more than private sector workers may only be true if you factor in level of education and tenure. Federal employees with advanced degrees tend to stay in federal jobs because those jobs provide job security. That's why the Great Recession didn't have as great of an impact in the Washington, D.C. area. That's why Maryland and Virginia housing prices and local job market didn't suffer as much--because most folks are federal workers, military contractors, and whatnot. Prince George County, Maryland, a county with the largest black American population is also the country with the largest population of blacks with advanced degrees in the entire country, many of whom commute to work in D.C.; they're either government contractors or work for the government. Republicans have demonized and have consistently gone after government workers for decades now. It is a proxy for targeting black and brown people, period. And yet, there are a good number of us who can't, for whatever reason, make this logical connection.

(31,849 posts)republicans' mantra of government doesn't/can't create jobs is proven a lie by just what you cite, the relative economic stability of D.C., P.G., and Northern VA, throughout the "recession."

(53,661 posts)My dad died a year after JFK was murdered, before MLK and RFK were. He might have been alive today if Obama was in office with his signature achievement of prohibiting insurers from discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions.
I'm glad he didn't live to see all of this, and he benefited from working for the CCC, having a union job and as he served in WW2 in the Pacific, then went on to start his own business. I went to school in beautiful buildings made by the WPA.
Public education and many other things benefited me in my life and he expected that future generations would also benefit, not just whites. I think liberals took the success of these for granted and stopped telling people how good they were. It just seemed logical to extend the same things to all.
He was a liberal and was against all forms of racism and religious intolerance. He would have approved of Obama's efforts to improve infrastructure and lives. He'd have had a heart attack watching the insane clown posse of the GOP taking over this country.
After the white flight era, things got more politically covert with the racism. It is exactly as you state here, and they have been willing to burn down the house that gave whites so much with equality for not just them, but everyone... just for this.
The country has not moved forward on this and now the RWNJs want to eliminate the USA to its root ideas to continue this foolishness. They've given all pretense of principles now and are just at the same place as they were before the Civil War.
I now see the connection between their hatred of the liberals, government and all the rest, including whites in the Democratic Party. So the issue is as it has been for years, racism. It is why they support nepotism, etc.
At least I live in an area with a fusion of many races and cultures and no one but the conservative troglodytes are pushing this. And they are getting converts among the young with their Libertarian spiel, very hateful to us. It was stupid of me to think they would change.
No wonder they grabbed the 'joking' racism of Rush and then embraced the fiery bigotry of Jones, Paul and Beck. Dammit...

(53,661 posts)The quality of the videos I've seen produced are very good. I used to record shows when I wasn't at home by setting the timer on my VHS. Now I convert anything like that to store on an external hard drive to watch on my computer.
EDIT: Information on the service:
https://www.tivo.com/shop
Description of how it works:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TiVo
It says TIVO cut out the feature to not record the commericals because television stations might go after them for doing it.
