This is the AFRICAN AMERICAN Forum. A dying place where refugees seek refugeLiberalStalwart is the latest in a long line of black DUers that won't step foot in this place now.
Now apparently the target has been placed on TarheelDem's back (and has for some time) http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024457003 and after the battling that bravenak and others have been through, pretty soon the only black folks that still come to this place will be... none. Except for whatever 3-4 still remain in GD that lap up every bit of spew from these folks and hate the president as much as they do.

(24,544 posts)I've seen you laugh in the faces of these idiots more times than I can count. Their sputtering impotent rage is like a tonic to you, Sid and a few others.
But the issue to me is why do you HAVE to handle these people? Prosense gets it worse than anyone else here, and she is another one that can handle herself and her detractors, but again the point is why does she HAVE to? She cannot post a thread without being called a paid shill among any number of insults. Not just "I disagree with you" but the nastiest insults. And the fact that she is another black poster here with a bullseye on her back just pisses me off even more.
I'm personally sick of this crap. And this is all just a few days after LiberalStalwart left. If we were to actually go back to DU circa 2008 and count the number of black posters that were around then, how many would still be here? It's almost as if there is a concerted effort to run us off this damn web site and I'm about to let them because I can think of much better things to with my time that "converse" with the left version of the Tea Party. If some of these folks had their way, there would only be about 5 of us here posting and coincidentally, it will be the same less than handful of us that think that Black Agenda Report speaks "trooth to powa."
Tarheel_Dem
(31,240 posts)I don't take them seriously. I could give a shit what they think about me. Blacks are the most loyal Democratic Party constituency. If they can cause a chasm between blacks and the white liberal base, then their job will be done. By the way, they're failing miserably.
Last time I checked the president still enjoyed over 80% support from Liberal Dems, and 90%+ from AA's.
It smacks of an "orchestrated" campaign, and probably well funded. The thing is, if they conquer DU, does that really change anything in the real world?

(24,544 posts)the Caribbean, etc. etc. but somehow, it is absolute UNACCEPTABLE with a capital U to say anything bad about Latin America. Latin America???
I disagreed vehemently with Tarheel's statement about Latin America and I told her so. But the white hot anger directed at that comment by the same folks that skip lightly over really disgusting comments made about other parts of the world has to be one of the most headscratchingly stupid and hypocritical things I have EVER seen here.
Case in point http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024202349 look at the number of people begging this poster who had a post hidden for saying something really, really nasty about India not to leave? And he didn't just make one nasty comment about India. He made SEVERAL really nasty comments about India.
And there are nasty comments made about the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa etc. etc. etc. routinely here.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)Interesting though. Perhaps it's because more people have traveled there. I don't think we should be insulting any culture based on such stereotypes. That said, I like Blue Jazz. I thought those posts were out of character for him.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,240 posts)time as a victim of the mean old black guy in the White House. The statement was in reference to Latin American leaders who blame every shitty thing that happens in their countries, on the US. It's a great diversion tactic, but I find it a bit played out.
Number23
(24,544 posts)I still disagree with what you said. You know that. But I still find it beyond hypocritical all of the really absurd "disapproval" that your comment illicited. If half these folks had some of the crap they said years ago tossed back in their faces, they'd have logged out permanently by now.
It's like Louis Farrakhan. I disagree with 97.5% of what that man says and does. But let some white person tell me how I SHOULD or need to feel about the man (as if I need their permission) and all hell breaks loose.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)because I said I would see Farrakhan if he came to town. It was in reference to some politician attending a talk of his. I can't remember who. My point was you can see someone speak without holding all their views, that one isn't responsible for what he says. They didn't agree. I said it must be very hard to attend events if you have to know in advance you aren't going to have an issue with anything they say.
When they bring that crap up about Morales or whatever old thing they dredge up, it's just an excuse for a witch hunt.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)Okay. Well, Latin Americans actually have a lot of reason to blame the US, but ironically the fact they are now saying so out loud shows how much US power has diminished in the region.

(24,544 posts)Greenwald who currently lives in Latin America. In my humble opinion, that was the Alpha and the Omega of the "OMG OMG did she see what she said about Latin America??!1" hyperventilation. That and the fact that a large number of socialist governments reside in that part of the world.
I don't agree with insulting any culture either. But I definitely find it so very, very interesting all of the hatred directed at her for comment about LA when people have said just as nasty and needless things about other parts of the world.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)Why does the NSA story have to be all about canonizing Greenwald and Snowden? They are far less important that the broader issue of privacy vs. national security and surveillance. Attack St. Greenwald and you're the enemy. It's so silly.

(10,893 posts)to not exactly be the place that I read about in the brochure. I originally found this place in 2012 in the heat of the GOP primaries, just as a sort of sanctuary from the Ron Paul worship on YouTube and GOP/libertarian talking point parrots elsewhere online. I was in love with DU for a while, but recently (especially since the NSA story gained attention), things have really gotten nasty around here. Not once did I ever imagine that a person would be called a "cheerleader" or a "paid shill" on a Democratic website just for posting something positive about the Democratic President or criticizing Snowden and Greenwald. Never. Furthermore, I've even heard people accuse others of diverting from (name policy they disagree with Obama on) whenever there is a poster who starts a thread in GD about social issues such as feminism and racism, for example. It's gotten crazy enough to where I am nearly left speechless.
I'll still continue to post here regularly and check on some of the news before it hits the TV, but yeah...sometimes it's easy to forget that I'm on a site dedicated to Democrats. The positive threads about Obama and the Democratic Party in general usually only garner about a few dozen recs maximum, while the outrage posts easily get into the hundreds, no matter if the outrage is recycled/misplaced or not. Clearly not everyone who posts here is a Democrat, and as Tarheel Dem mentioned in one thread, this place has seen its share of infiltrators from sites such as DailyPaul.
JI7
(89,264 posts)since people who are right wingers would get banned of course they will claim to be something in order to stay.
all the shit they spew sounds the same as i hear from the wingnuts on other sites where they don't have to hide who they are. wingnuts are always attacking black people and blame them for obama. these people are pretty much the same. they wont admit it because they can't on here.
but you can tell from the pattern.
just look at how they try to compare snowden to martin luther king, gandhi, rosa parks etc. yeah, these people sure know something about race.
and of course the "class not race" bs .
and there was not this much complaint about nsa when it was Bush. they are the ones who are reacting differently. i don't remember democrats making nsa a huge thing during bush years. the issues then was the wars and things like jobs, education etc. the same issues that most dems and liberals see as important.
but a certain crowd just can't stand a black guy is in office and has certain powers.

(24,544 posts)Like she said upthread, she calls these folks out. She laughs in their faces. These people pretend to be the Democratic party's "base" when disdain and hatred are the only emotions they show towards the Dem party and government as a whole. And I say this as someone who is an INDEPENDENT and no more committed to the Dem party than the average person, I am by no means a "player" in the Dem game.

Exactly. Not only infiltrators but as one astute person noted, this place is crawling with "nihilists of the left" who are every bit as clueless and destructive as the Tea Party. Which is why they bray so loudly whenever anyone makes that comparison -- and that comparison gets made ALOT. It's just shocking what this place has turned into and I'm not surprised that so many of the smartest folks are long gone.

(31,240 posts)Vote for Democrats.
Winning elections is important therefore, advocating in favor of Republican nominees or in favor of third-party spoiler candidates that could split the vote and throw an election to our conservative opponents is never permitted on Democratic Underground. But that does not mean that DU members are required to always be completely supportive of Democrats. During the ups-and-downs of politics and policy-making, it is perfectly normal to have mixed feelings about the Democratic officials we worked hard to help elect. When we are not in the heat of election season, members are permitted to post strong criticism or disappointment with our Democratic elected officials, or to express ambivalence about voting for them. In Democratic primaries, members may support whomever they choose. But when general election season begins, DU members must support Democratic nominees (EXCEPT in rare cases where were a non-Democrat is most likely to defeat the conservative alternative, or where there is no possibility of splitting the liberal vote and inadvertently throwing the election to the conservative alternative). For presidential contests, election season begins when both major-party nominees become clear. For non-presidential contests, election season begins on Labor Day. Everyone here on DU needs to work together to elect more Democrats and fewer Republicans to all levels of American government. If you are bashing, trashing, undermining, or depressing turnout for our candidates during election season, we'll assume you are rooting for the other side.
Voting rights, abortion rights, minority rights and a whole host of other issues have fallen victim to a bunch of libertarian bullshit. The one thing that gives me hope, however, is that polling doesn't match the venom we see on DU which is why I don't think we're necessarily dealing with Democrats.

(53,661 posts)The hatred is just - INSANE. I did not want to see this, I had a hard time getting a grasp of how bad it could be.
I know I freaked seeing Palin doing her klan rallies in the South - honest to God, when I saw those in 2008 - it was like going back in time. The only thing missing was the white robes and pointed hoods and the cross burnings. Stupid me, I thought people had evolved.
After that and those lunatics who were going to kill him and a lot of blacks to start a race war - not sure if that was the Waffle House Putsch Gang- or Aryan nations or Nazis or what - I was unable to watch any more coverage. I felt like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
I couldn't watch the returns that night, just kept on flicking the TV and internet on and off. I just couldn't bear to see the loss to those (insert word here).
Then the win!!! He was elected and I thought, maybe it will be different, after all. I told myself, you are an old lady, what you remember is old and the new generation doesn't feel the fear and angst, it's their world now, great for all of us.
I cried for 3 days. I couldn't believe it was over. At last.
Then he was inaugurated and the shit started up the first day! It NEVER let up! I argued with the wingnuts for a couple years and finally joined DU after the election in 2010.
I'd enough of the troglodyte right where I'd been posting for years on a mixed board -as they finally started up with their psychopathic racist rants, not amenable to reason or facts. But the final straw was after I doubled down on them for posting all that hate and the 'liberals' apologized to the RWNJs whining like victims!
I came here and it was better. Outright RWNJs were getting banned but then it seemed the same bunch I begged to vote in 2010 who'd gone all CT were here and went after Obama. And still going on here now, just faster, much, much more slick, but same song and dance.
All of this is what I call the national 'Id' finally showing itself. And it's not pretty!

(1,989 posts)Every time I step away...things go crazy. I don't know what's going on here, lately. DU has been an eye opener for me, though. I sometimes read some of the stuff that's written on DU to my mother. She's like..."are you sure those are democrats?" Mom, you have no idea!!!
I've been reading and playing catch up. You guys are tough. I get tired of the "crazy" some days and I just have to step away. To my mind, in many ways...President Obama has been the best president I've seen in my lifetime. But, I promise...I will be glad when someone else gets it in the White House.
Sometimes, I see these lists of people DUers want to see in the White House, and you know...it's just best not to post on those days. Because I'm thinking...no one in their right mind thinks this person has a snow ball's chance in hell getting elected. We have a democrat in the White House right now. There are some things getting done right now...that wouldn't be getting done with a republican in the White House. And, yet...the great search for the next "truly" progressive president has started. Well, I hope they find that person.
But, if they can't recognize President Obama as a decent man, trying to do the right thing...it's just a lost cause. I disagree with the President on policies sometimes. Heck, often. But, with some folks...NOTHING is getting done, just because what they want isn't getting done.
That's a part of the privilege, don't you think? Minorities are so used to having to wait...and wait...and wait. But, when you're a part of a group that's used to the world revolving around you...any delay is unacceptable.
Even being poor as a part of a majority is different from being poor as part of a minority community. It would suck regardless. But, the expectations are just different.

I got sooo drunk one thanksgiving we had to take a cab home and come back the next day to get our car. That was the night she told my MIL to have that ni***-gal wash the dishes up. Poor old lady. I did not wash the dishes. I left my plate on the table and did not scrape if off into the trash can. Then I proceeded to make everyone uncomfortable by telling white man black man jokes. The black man always wins in those jokes. I'm sure I practiced reverse racism since I reflected the racism back at the bigot, thereby becoming the 'real' racist. Like those Black Panthers at the Philly election.
I think that DU needs somebody to tell them what they sound like. It's fun sometimes, and when I can't do it anymore I'm pretty sure I'll be run off too. Banned or something. Until then, I will try to get on the ignore lists of any and all DU racists and misogynists.

(1,989 posts)I didn't realize what that opening post was about. I didn't recognize it as a call out. I'm so slow. I have never turned a laser on a DUer with the purpose of pushing them off the site. But, then again, this seems less about democratic principles and more about controlling the conversation and people, not just on the site...but nationwide.
Only authorized lockstep thinking allowed, all others will be shut down and shamed. At times, we enable the crap, too. I tell my sons, don't become a part of the newly "enslaved'. Don't leave one set of chains for another mental set. That's why I don't give black republicans a hard time. I want to challenge their policies...not their right as a free people to have a different philosophy.
The people who suggest Obama supporters are cheerleaders...they have a different agenda, entirely. They are mad that you aren't the cheerleaders of the most important items on their list. What outrages them, should outrage you too. But, then, even if you're outraged...wait, you're not outraged enough. Uh, oh...now, you're not outraged in the right way. Yesterday, you should have picketed. Wait...you were picketing. You should have been doing voting registration. What? You were doing voter registration...you should have been (apparently doing whatever the hell they said you should be doing...when they said you should have been doing it.)
It's about control, not principle.
But, it also proves something else, loud and clear. There are some on DU, who think the party would be fine without this nice, BIG, voting block. When you can treat people ANY KIND OF WAY YOU WANT...well, heck...apparently, you don't think you need them.
One of the lessons of Hillary Clinton (2008), has apparently not been learned.

(24,544 posts)In the Dem party hierarchy of important constituents black voters are up there (which is kind of terrifying considering how it seems that many of the things that affect us the most take the longest to get done). Anarchists, Green Tea Baggers, and "left" nihilists are way down on the list of groups that anyone considers important and with damn good reason.
And I think that's where so much of this anger comes from. This resentment towards black voters, who are the delicious gravy that keep the Dem Party Pot Pie from getting dried out and completely cast aside, is absolutely disgusting and should be disturbing to everyone. People here seem to be honestly pissed that so many black DUers still support President Obama, as if the 85+% approval he shares in the black community is just a lie the media keeps telling them. They sound a lot like Karl Rove on election day when he refused to accept the numbers that Nate Silver, Gallup and other groups had been telling about an Obama romp. Our support for the president is ENTIRELY consistent with Dem national support for this president and especially for BLACK Dem support for this president so all of this bullying, harassment and resentment is bizarre and really does line up with Tarheel and others statement that these folks are probably not Democrats at all.

Why is bringing DU back to traditional Democratic Party values, the ones Obama and the DNC expressed eloquently to the applause of Democrats, now beneath contempt?
They don't even give lipservice to it anymore. I've only seen any failures used to bash PBO, not any real passion for it. No posts, no Recs, unless they can bash Democrats or Obama.
And talk against Baron Greenwald is to be censored now, when we have ignoratti calling for Obama to be impeached for media generated non-scandals repeatedly?
Lord Snowden's ugly comments about the elderly, whistleblowers and immigrants going with exactly the same tact as the baggers, is now Democratic Party and DU dogma that must not be discussed?

Why should I care if some guy wrote a book fantasizing about how wonderful soul food is? He's trying to sell books, of course he's going make everything sound comfy and nice. The real history of black people and chicken is that we rarely got any. Lots of times when a slave ate fried chicken it was stolen since they weren't allowed to have any. We got salt pork, cornmeal, fatback, molasses, and tobacco. The rest we scavenged for, and grew from the plots we tended to at night if the massa allowed us to tend our own fields near our shacks. That ain't soul food to me. That's slave food and I don't want to embrace it.
