Like many South Carolinians, Scott has received calls at home from phone bankers. She said one of these entreaties from the Sanders campaign led her to go off on a 10-minute tirade and demand an apology.
One of my experiences that I think I wont forget for a long time is a call that I got from the Sanders campaign. This person that called asked me was I voting for Sen. Sanders. I said no. I was voting for Secretary Clinton. The phone went silent for a little bit, Scott recounted. You could hear this person struggling to come up with what theyre going to say next.
They call that a real pregnant pause, nine months worth of pregnant pause. And he finally came back and he says to me, You know, Senator Sanders is for welfare.
This did not provoke a positive reaction from Scott.

(68,867 posts)Ran against Hillary Clinton in 08. I remember a lot of things about that primary election, but the words that I did not come away remembering were welfare, crime, and incarceration...
Perhaps it is because then Senator Obama had lived in Chicago during the 90s, and because black folks just don't do that F*cked up mess just to gain a vote!
So insulting!

(15,373 posts)When I am phone-banking for HRC, if the person I'm calling tells me that s/he is voting for Sanders, I say "Thank you for voting because that is the most important thing of all. Thank you for taking your time to speak with me and I wish you a good (night/good weekend/whatever)."
Period. If the person wants to chat more, I follow their lead. Some do; most don't.

(17,600 posts)(assuming that the stuff on this thread is true, of course; I'm not suggesting it isn't, but the level of incompetence is difficult to believe on any campaign ... unless he was sabotaged ...)
That's just pure incompetence.
It could be the incident described in the OP was an inexperienced volunteer who wasn't sufficiently trained, and was so blinded by the magnificence of Sanders' ideals that he didn't stop to actually think through what he was doing, and how he could actually hurt the campaign.
That stuff happens, and Clinton probably has a big advantage over Sanders in that the overall political experience of her phone bankers is probably a lot greater. I bet Sanders has a ton of people who never did this in their lives. That's very dangerous for a campaign and results in the stuff described in the OP.
If it was happening broadly and not quickly corrected, that represents incompetence by the leadership of the campaign staff.
I'm sure Bernie and his top advisers will do a post-mortem and this stuff will come out. Too late to fix it though.
(Please note I am not speaking as a supporter of either campaign, just doing some analysis here. Either one of ours is far better than any of the republicans.)

(42,014 posts)I'm so white I glow in the dark--I'm mostly Swedish, ethnically--and I was on welfare for years--long story. Of all the racist memes that piss me off this one pisses me off the most. Nobody looks at me today and suspects a sketchy background. People are shocked if I say "welfare" "food Banks" and oh yeah, "housing projects" all of which were part of my experience. I don't bother saying "jail" because I'm not into oversharing.
My husband, who was from Russian/German decent was raised in housing projects, and has a rougher background than I do.
My stories almost emplifies white privilege. I walked away from that shit. I don't have it shoved in my face all the time. It's not a default expectation.

(24,544 posts)I have been saying that same thing for months. This is one of the most poorly thought out and run campaigns I've ever seen.
I honestly don't know what's worse. The trolling supporters converging like maggots on the social media presence of every person/org that doesn't support Sanders; the tomfoolery of the Sanders campaign itself ie trying to improperly access their competitors files and then FUNDRAISING off it when caught; or the overwhelming consensus from every single expert and analyst that the vast majority of Sanders' policy proposals are 'unrealistic.' The word "delusional" has also been used too many times to describe his policies.
It's just bad all the way around. Bad.
Kind of Blue
(8,709 posts)the objective is - rein in the far left and other dissatisfied democratic voters, to appear as if we've really had a choice. This is no contest with PoC, especially for AAs. I think the Clintons told him, "Just be your self, Bernie. Don't worry about PoC. They're not who we're after," to rile up the base. All of the above you've stated perfectly because they do not live in reality and the Clintons KNOW it. WE know it. If it wasn't for Sanders and his ardent fans, I'd never give HRC another look and see he's is barely trying, and not sit this election out for my first time evah.
I do not understand how Politics 101, as someone brilliantly said, eluded a longtime politician when it comes to PoC. Thanks, Bernie!
Only time will tell if he's operating according. Obviously I think he's doing just fine. Nothing else makes sense to me and I'm open to other explanations for tone deafness.

(32,342 posts)but around this summer I said that if the Sanders campaign was wise, they'd leave some of the more interesting kinds of Bernie supporters to tasks like licking envelopes, out of the way where they couldn't get into trouble.
Sadly, no one listens to me.
