When Danai Gurira couldn’t find complex stories about African women,

she wrote her own.

Moving here really did strike in me the desire to tell the African story on American soil. The stories about Africans always somehow miraculously had a Western protagonist. And I was, like, wow, do we not merit our own ability to tell our own stories?

So, I started to write plays that literally was like, if you come into this theater, you are going to sit down and you’re going to spend two hours or so with an African woman and you’re going to get to know her. You are going to see a full person, just like you see when you go watch all them other things.

What an actress! Watching her on The Walking Dead all these season, I had no idea she's from Zimbabwe nor could tell what a bubbling personality she is the character obscures. I've just always seen Michonne in images outside the series.

Thanks, wildeyed Looking forward to see or hear more about her play and the other women in it! Nice way to head off into the weekend.

me - I can't handle it. But every season I'm back thinking it's not really about zombies but what we become - the good, the bad - and who wants that kind of chaos in our society now. My kids gave me all their graphic novels to prepare myself and I only watch on demand to control what I see And I got to watch Talking Dead to bring me down.

Michonne is a super bad super hero. I don't know yet if she's eventually killed but that's when I stop watching. I said that when I thought they offed Glen but I was back again to find out. But they've taken so many licenses with the graphic novel for the show that I think the writers do pay attention to who we love.

I can't urge you to watch it but, my goodness, I love the character developments and surprises with the core group. My favorite line from Rick, the leader, " How many have you left to die through cowardice or incompetence? How many of you do I have to kill to save your lives?" Good Lord!

I will give it a go after I finish Z Nation, a comedy series set in the zombie apocalypse. I watched part of the first episode of Walking Dead the other day and decide I could only deal with one zombie TV show at a time. But football is over, so I have more time now, and it is probably more cheerful than GDP for the foreseeable future too

I don't think there's ever been a "damsel" in less distress on screen.
