Related: About this forumHere's Why Black People Should Think Twice Before Voting For Hillary Clinton
Eighty percent of black Democratic voters intended to cast their ballots for the 2016 presidential candidate in August 2015 -- and not much has changed since then. But with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) becoming a serious opponent for Clinton in the race to the Democratic nomination, many African-Americans are asking if the former Secretary of State really deserves the black vote.
Author and legal scholar Michelle Alexander doesnt think so.
"What have the Clintons done to earn such devotion? Did they take extreme political risks to defend the rights of African Americans?" the author of The New Jim Crow asks in a new essay for The Nation. "Did they courageously stand up to right-wing demagoguery about black communities? Did they help usher in a new era of hope and prosperity for neighborhoods devastated by deindustrialization, globalization, and the disappearance of work?"

I would add to the points made by this author the racist comments that Bill Clinton made after his wife lost to Barack Obama in the 2008 South Carolina primary.
And yes, maybe I don't understand because I am not black myself. I get that. I cannot walk in a black person's shoes. But I am an Asian American gay man so I do know what it is like to be a minority living in this country since I am a member of two minority groups myself. And I don't think that the Clinton's have dome much for Asians and LGBT's either for that matter.

Try this scenario -
Clinton wins the nomination and goes up against Kasich -
Do your words hold true?
Note - I'm not happy with either candidate so don't do what all first timers do in this group and assume I'm in the bag for Clinton.
You are a gay Asian male - what will you do?
Do you have the courage of your convictions to make that statement in November if that above scenario plays out?

(13,058 posts)courage of my convictions. I am using one set of criteria during the primary campaign and will use different criteria during the general election campaign. I am supporting one canddiate now but I will support the party's nominee in November. I assume that you will do the same. And I am not assuming anything about anybody.

(31,828 posts)I could sit out in November (NJ) - and the Democratic Nominee will still win.

(56,582 posts)calculation here, I think that would make a difference, but I can't seem to get that through people's fervor.
I find both of the remaining candidates extremely disappointing in multiple ways, and I'm seriously worried about our chances in November because of that. But once people set up a dichotomy there's really no talking anymore...

Also, just for the record, President Obama has made it clear that he considers her to be the candidate more likely to continue the policies of his Presidency.

(2,034 posts)this post is going to convince me not to vote for her. It's seriously lacking. I don't get what gives you the right to come and lecture us why we should not vote for her. For that matter why should I as a black man vote for Bernie Sanders? He hasn't done anything for my people. Marching with Dr. King doesn't count, sorry but can't go for this and certainly won't rec this.
totodeinhere
(13,058 posts)But since you maintain that Sanders hasn't done anything for your people, which would draw disagreement from many observers, at least he hasn't done anything to harm your people as the Clinton's have. But obviously you are free to support whom you will as am I and everybody else.

(496 posts)Next time, spend some time listening to what folks here are talking about before posting something like this. I'm not against BS nor am I against HC, but it's the BS supporters who have time and time again 'shown their asses' and personally, it's obnoxious, insulting, and boring.
I get that you aren't a 'typical' BS supporter. Great! Then you know what it's like to be lectured to by people who have no f'ing clue what it is to live in your skin.
I'm trying to give folks the benefit of the doubt and will just assume that it's ignorance rather than malice. You would do us a favor if you stick around and study and observe what we are saying in the future...maybe take a look at recent OPs by long-standing members and read the responses to get a feel for the group and their concerns...maybe you could even help carry that message to folks outside of this group...

1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)This IS a discussion group, and far from an echo-chamber (which you would know, if you spent more in the Group, than the time it took to post the article). However, we tire of posts that get posted time, and again, in other forums, by Non-Black folks, regarding what Black folks should/shouldn't do ... only to have a non-Black person make a special point to post it to this Group ... as if, our comments on the article in the other 8 postings were insufficient.

Secondly I have been subscribed to this particular group for several years and I have posted to it before. I wish I had time to do more but I don't. If the admins have the ability to look up how long I have been subscribed to this group then I wish they would. If not please take my word for it. Thank you.
Also, nowhere in the article does it presume to tell black folks or anyone else what they should do or not do. As I already said I merely posted it for its informational value.

(13,058 posts)Do you mean you and your 250 posts? I have been here since 2008. I registered so I could show my support for Barack Obama during the primary season and I have stuck around ever since. To suggest that I do not listen to what others at DU say is presumptuous and condescending.
Digital Puppy
(496 posts)Is it that your block list is so large that you have run out of veterans AA posters to listen to, or is it you only want to listen to who you deem worthy...in other words, folks with more than 250 posts?
The fact is you didn't care about what I or anyone else had to say in this forum and I dare to guess wanted to get more people put on "time out"...that's not presumptuous, that's a fact which can be verified by your block list as well as your actions in this thread.
Condescending? Perhaps...it's not like that will stop or slow you from any of your actions since you clearly know what is best and how to engage people.
Yeah, thanks for the instruction and lesson. So glad you stopped by to explain things!
