SAG Awards: Diversity Reigns in a Rebuke to #OscarsSoWhite

Idris Elba, who failed to earn an Oscar nomination for his performance in 'Beasts of No Nation,' was the toast of the evening.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sag-awards-diversity-reigns-a-860852

Elba received a supporting actor award for "Beasts" and a second trophy for TV's Luther.

His role in "Beasts" was very painful to watch, IMO, which is also why he is such a good actor. I thought this latest season of Luther was not the best, possibly because it was so short. But I am very glad that he - and others - received well-deserved recognition at the SAG awards.

voting processes of each one:

SAG: http://www.sagawards.org/faq

Process:

Voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards® is done in two stages. In the first stage, members of the Motion Picture and Television Nominating Committees review For Your Consideration materials and vote on the nominees.

In the second stage of voting, all active members who paid their November 2015 dues by December 1st will receive voting information and For Your Consideration materials to review and vote for the recipients.

Selection of the Nominating Committee:
The SAG Awards® Theatrical Motion Picture and Television Nominating Committees are newly drawn each April, each made up of 2200 members. The committees are selected by a random sample drawing of active paid-up members.

Members selected to serve on the Motion Picture and Television nominating committees are not eligible to serve on their respective committees again for eight years. This allows more members the opportunity to serve on these important committees.

How to join SAG: http://www.sagaftra.org/content/steps-join

Oscars: http://www.oscars.org/oscars/voting

Process:
Regular awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective film achievements in a wide variety of categories. Most categories are nominated by the members of the corresponding branch–actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. However, certain categories such as Foreign Language Film and Animated Feature Film have special voting rules which can be viewed at our Rules & Eligibility page.

All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Nominations voting is conducted using both paper and online ballots, with online voting being the preferred choice for the overwhelming majority of Academy members. Voting for nominations begins in late December, and all votes are tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
...
Finals voting is also conducted via online and paper ballots.

During finals, all Oscar categories are on the ballot for voting members.

How to become a "member:" apparently not all members are voting members. http://www.oscars.org/about/become-new-member

That's likely TMI. But this recent article sums some of it up nicely. http://www.bustle.com/articles/59938-sag-awards-vs-oscars-how-do-the-nominees-compare-in-this-years-biggest-awards-races

For starters, the voting bodies are different. SAG membership consists entirely of actors, while the Academy is made up of 17 branches that represent the breadth of the film industry (actors, but also directors, writers, cinematographers, costume designers, and more). There are approximately 160,000 actors with SAG cards across the country; the Academy is much more exclusive, with just under 6,000 members as of a 2012 study.

SAG nominees are selected by a smaller committee of 2,100 members that are randomly selected anew every year. (A separate random sample of 2,100 members also votes on the SAG television awards.) Once that smaller sample chooses the nominees, the entire membership gets to vote on the winners. Conversely, Oscar nominees are selected only by their own branch: actors pick the acting nominees, directors the directing nominees, etc. Once the nominees are determined, the entire Academy votes on the winners. This year, the Actor's Branch of the Academy includes 1,176 members who will choose the Oscar acting category nominees, versus 2,100 choosing the SAG nominees.

peers. The SAG Awards include ensemble awards which are hugely important and in some ways more profound than individual awards, and has more categories of performance type. As Mr Elba can demonstrate with his two awards, SAG Awards cover cinema and television performances.

On the other hand the Oscars give awards to all the crafts in the film business, and while the actors are my favorite and the recipients of most public attention the other crafts are just as vital to the art form and also require strong infusions of diversity and opportunity. Directors, writers, designers, editors, sound recorders and mixers, composers and all the rest. While they don't get the spotlight, they make the spotlight and place the actors in it and those positions are really the keys to a better and more inclusive film business. Those less glitzy Oscar categories feed not only the acting Oscars but the SAG Awards for film and Golden Globes as well. The films that get nominated will always be films that got made. That seems simple and obvious but it is one of those simple truths that carries a world of power with it.

I am not represented on television as a viewer. I don't see gay black heroes doing their same or black people saving the world over and over again and if by some grace of god my work is chosen to be adapted to film or television I will insist on a diverse cast or they can pass on my work

so many times that I practically know all the dialogue! The program had an outstandingly diverse ensemble cast and I loved every actor/actress in it. I have also loved seeing their later work.

For example, I loved Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters in Treme; Sonya Sohn in Body of Proof, and Michael K. Williams in Boardwalk Empire, etc., etc. Almost every cast member has gone on to compelling roles and I am delighted to see that.

IMO, The Wire is one of the BEST series ever.

Goodness gracious.... is he married or anything??

What were we talking about? He won an award! Hey, that's great! He deserves it, I'm sure! Everyone in the theater already got the sweetest award by watching every scene that gorgeous piece of chocolate was in....

Goodness gracious...

Edit: I was a bit distracted before but this quote from my girl Queen nails it:

Queen Latifah won a SAG Award, the second of her career, for playing the singer Bessie Smith in HBO’s Bessie. “I hope that anyone our there who does not come in the package that people say you should, keep fighting for it,” she said.

That's my girl!
