no. that barack obama became the first black president is simply a matter of timing. someone would be first, he was there with backers when the party decided to run a black candidate (which itself was a product of political calculations). the rarity has nothing in particular to do with BO's specialness, it's a product of history.

as for people coming out of harvard law & becoming senators, presidents, whatever -- it happens often enough to fill the limited slots.

And as a Whine Pre-emptive: I am calling out the above as a racist, but I'm am shocked to see this argument on DU ... I distinctly recall so many DUers up in arms when the right made this same argument in 2008 ... that Barack Obama was nothing special; he just happened to be an available Black man when the Democratic party needed a Black man.

"Some" people are only comfortable with the black American experience when the narrative includes shoe shine men and laundresses. Or in today's world - black youth on the South side of Chicago or black, single mothers in Camden NJ.

Now Obama wasn't "poor enough" and is being punished for his mother's and grandmother's accomplishments.

Why do you think so few of us still post on this web site? Why so few of us start OPs anyplace but in this group? Why even fewer have stars next to our names?

There has been a loud and libertarian meme for YEARS that he was merely a vessel for the Powers that Be. That he is an "empty suit" and a "slave" to the 1%. People here openly and loudly question his intelligence on a regular basis.

You see the polls and hear from actual liberals and Obama has a 85%+ approval rate. But yet, somehow, on the Intertubes where people can scream all day long about how "liberal" they are and then go and smoke a joint listening to their favorite Ron Paul speech, all of the liberals hate him and consider him a conservative. I don't buy it and never have.
