On Monday, Nov. 2, the Daniel Holtzclaw trial commenced in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Charged with 36 offenses including sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy, stalking, and rape, ex-officer Holtzclaw allegedly targeted 13 women during his three-year tenure with the Oklahoma City Police Department. His victims reportedly ranged in age from 17 to late 50s, but the unifying thread of his accusers is race. Holtzclaw targeted African-American women. Details of a lengthy record of criminal sexual misconduct while on patrol surfaced after an extensive investigation by the Oklahoma City Police Department. The investigation commenced in June 2014 as a result of a 57-year-old black grandmother immediately coming forward to report his sexually violent behavior.....
The lack of mass media coverage of the investigation of and trial for Holtzclaw emerges from the unique intersection of racism and sexism in the lives of black women. Historically and contemporarily, the victimization of black women in the U.S. through sexual and other forms of violence does not incite a widespread call to action
I keep up on race and gender related news, but I had not noticed this at all. It's like the entire media has decided that this story is not important.

(4,787 posts)reasoning that women with an arrest record would be afraid to report him for his crimes, or if they did, would not believed. The detectives on the case noticed that he had an unusually high number of computer inquiries/license checks while he was on patrol. They started locating/speaking with the women whom he had looked up, and found more of his victims as a result.
The grandmother who was his last victim didn't fit that profile. If he was getting bolder, his next step might well have been rape and murder.

(24,544 posts)I'm sure the nature of his crimes would have escalated as well.
It is horrible what those women had to endure. I hope that they are able to get some form of justice soon.
