Civil rights leader Julian Bond was remembered Saturday as a fearless man with strong convictions who put his life on the line more than once as he supported social justice initiatives.
It was that kind of bravery that impressed longtime Democrat leader Joe Reed during a memorial ceremony at the civil rights memorial that Bond helped dedicate in 1989.
While other people were running, dodging and hiding, he stood tall and didnt worry about the consequences, said Reed, as the crowd began to thin. Thats leadership, thats courage.
Bond, who died Aug. 15 at the age of 75, was lauded by speakers at a ceremony highlighted by the placement of rose petals on the watery civil rights memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center.
