Listen: Michael Eric Dyson's Interview on His Break With Cornel West

topstories

“Something irrational is going on,” Dyson said, later adding, “It was the nastiness of the tone. The unprincipled assault. There’s a difference between that and ad hominem.”

West’s ever personal turn has “obscured the sometimes powerful and sometimes luminous and other times legitimate critique” he may have, according to Dyson.

“But when you weight it down under the burden of extraordinary, personal bitterness, it just wipes away all the good stuff that you might say and makes us question what it is about the motivation for your criticism in the long run,” he said.

Dyson is talking about both West’s critique of Obama and of the scholar’s attacks on Dyson and his peers, both older and younger, primarily Melissa Harris-Perry, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. West has called them all traitors of sorts, liars and opportunists who choose to toe the Obama administration line. This despite the fact that all have been critical of President Obama at one point or another, but have couched their criticism with respect for both the office and the place President Obama holds in the hearts of many African Americans.

West, who has compared himself to slain civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., has called them “false prophets,” leading with the idea that his voice is the only one ringing with any truth.

Yet, for Dyson, there is something very unlike MLK about this assessment.

Maybe now the folks who have come back here and been shocked at the derision from regular participants will get it now?

That was an awesome read, JAG.

Is West upset that his place—or his perceived place—in the hearts and minds of African Americans was supplanted by Obama? Dyson doesn’t think West’s ego is that huge to believe he could box with the place in history Obama earned. But the deeply personal nature of his attacks seems to hint that something is amiss, he says.

“It would take an egomaniac to believe that you had a chance first of all. That it's a competition. To think that you're in competition with him to begin with is ridiculous,” Dyson said.

Is it okay for me to say, one angry black man. He and Tavis have pissed me off for a long time.

It is petty. It's look at me, look at me!

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

You are always being asked to wait.

the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

It's a shame that they have taken a flame thrower to their own legacies and credibility in this way. I used to love me some Cornel West.

Also, take note of the folks that still toss these brothers names around as if they still have clout. Nine times out of ten, it's not anyone with any valid connection or understanding of the black community but is a likely Obama hater that gets the tingles at the prospect of using a black person to criticize this president.

Some cretin actually sent me a link to an article on Black Agenda Report here. The second I saw the name of the publication in the link, I just laughed. I know a lot of black people and NONE of them take that spittle flecked rag even the tiniest bit seriously. Again, for some folks, the prospect of using brown folks to slam this president is just too tempting, even when the sources they're using to do so are only given the tiniest bit of clout in clueless white communities and most black folks won't give them the time of day.

Again - things are pretty cushy in Princeton. I should see if I can get my friend who is doing down there what I'm doing in my town - a community kitchen - to call him for a donation.

I'll give her the list of prominent Conservatives in my district that have given and are volunteering time to the cause. Shame him a little bit in case he says "no".

the pie as they're used to getting are the core patrons and audience for BAR. They can all have each other.

And I love how the article is actually trying to give West credit for Obama's successes! Who the fuck is Chris Floyd? Any man that is only able to make create an international reputation for themselves by putting down another brother (MED) gets nothing from me. Even Corny was well established and regarded before he fell on the hate train with Obama.

these are people who think blackagendareport is the voice of the african american community.

they think or want to believe the opinion of people of color on here are not representative of most others.

but when you get election results they will claim black people voted for the dem they hate only because obama told them to even though they tried to claim black people don't like him.

this is the type of logic you deal with.

I read this morning - someone write "fuck so an so and Sharpton".

One of the most reviled and hated black Americans by even moderate Republicans. The man who ran for President with a platform that included being pro Same Sex Marriage. A man who speaks to Poverty and Class every chance he gets.
