AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Twenty-seven Air Force Academy cadets were injured last Thursday after a traditional hazing event left some with concussions, broken collar bones and cuts and bruises.

The hazing, known as First Shirt/First Snow, is an unofficial tradition that occurs every year on the first snow when freshmen cadets try to throw their cadet first sergeant in the snow, while the upperclassmen try to defend the sergeant.

"We're going to consider this a teachable moment," said John Van Winkle, an academy spokesman. "They are going to learn from that situation."

In other words, the academy will not be taking punitive actions against the cadets who participated and will let the episode, and its consequences, speak for themselves.

My neighbor is an E-7 in the Air Force Reserves. He kind of got mad at me when I harmlessly mentioned that if I were to do it all over again that I'd be a finance corp officer in the Air Force instead of being an Infantry Officer because you get the same pay (including hazardous duty pay), 6 month deployments (at least that was what they were doing in Iraq in 2004), an air conditioned office, and none of the danger.

Apparently he thought that being stuck on one of those super FOBs with a PX and a Burger King was just as dangerous of a job as going out on patrol every day and fighting the fight of an Infantryman. I would never say this to his face (as I like to remain as civil as possible with my neighbors) but I wonder if he lost 5 guys in his platoon (or whatever they call their units in the Air Force) while he was fixing computer servers on his base like I lost 5 guys while I was out on patrol.
