New York, New Jersey Bombing Suspect to Be Arraigned From Hospital Bed

By EMILY SHAPIRO - Oct 13, 2016, 10:21 AM ET

A man accused of planting bombs in New Jersey and New York City and then engaging police in a shootout is expected to be arraigned from his hospital bed today on weapons and attempted murder charges.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, has been in a New Jersey hospital since he was injured during the police shootout in Linden, New Jersey, Sept. 19.

He is suspected of leaving explosive devices in New Jersey and Manhattan the weekend before his capture. No one was injured in New Jersey, but the Manhattan blast went off on a busy street on a Saturday night and sent debris flying through the air and pedestrians running down the street, leaving 31 people injured.

Rahami is charged with weapons offenses and five counts of attempted murder of a police officer. He is expected to appear at the arraignment via video from his hospital bed in connection to the New Jersey incidents. It will be his first court appearance.

Rahami's public defenders reportedly have a policy of not commenting on cases.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

New York City bombing suspect communicating with authorities by nodding

The hospitalized man accused of setting bombs in New York City and New Jersey has been communicating with authorities by nodding, CBS News has learned.

Two law enforcement officials confirmed to CBS News that Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, nodded no when asked if anybody else was involved in the bombings that injured 31 people in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood last month. No one was injured in the New Jersey explosion.

Rahami, an Afghan-born U.S. citizen, was shot between eight and 10 times when he was captured in northern New Jersey two days after he allegedly detonated a pipe bomb along the route of a Marine Corps charity race in the New Jersey shore town of Seaside Park and a pressure cooker bomb in New York City on Sept. 17.

When asked if the bombing locations were chosen at random, Rahami nodded yes, the law enforcement officials told CBS News.
