NEWPORT NEWS

Ignoring the heat of the midday sun, 87-year-old former Sen. John Warner led his family and friends on a private viewing Saturday at Newport News Shipbuilding of the Navy's newest submarine, SSN 785, which bears his name.

It was several hours before thousands of shipyard workers, sailors, their families and various dignitaries gathered to watch his wife, Jeanne Warner, christen the vessel by smashing a bottle of American sparkling wine across its bow.

But before the breaking glass, the speeches and the fireworks, the former senator reveled in a quieter introduction of the ship to those closest to him.

As they stared mouths agape up at the 7,800-ton vessel suspended in the floating dry dock, his three adult children and friends spoke of their affection for the Navy and for the former five-term senator, Navy secretary, sailor and Marine officer.
