Pentagon determined to plug leaks

After a three-hour, closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill on the proliferation of national security leaks, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey announced new protocols Thursday on how to stop the leaks of classified information to the press.

“The secretary and Chairman Dempsey believe that the vast majority of the millions of defense personnel with security clearances would never leak classified material. However, they believe we must do more to protect sensitive information,” Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement.

The Pentagon said it was issuing new guidance on protecting classified information that some 4 million defense workers have access to, including better training, the creation of an incident report system and the implementation of President Barack Obama’s executive order establishing an Insider Threat Task Force.

“Secretary Panetta has directed that the department establish a new “top down” reporting system for monitoring national-level disclosures,” Little said.
