IAPA says access to public information continues to be setback for the press
MIAMI, Florida (October 22. 2014)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has identified lack of access to public information and transparency in government as one of the main obstacles for the work of the press in many countries of the Americas.
The IAPA yesterday wound up its twice-yearly review of the state of press freedom at its 70th General Assembly, held in Santiago, Chile, with adoption of 13 resolutions, among them one on access to public information in which it is declared that despite a trend in the region toward passage of access laws “there persists the resistance of some governments to allowing the flow of official information.”

WHEREAS in United States journalists continue to face obstacles to obtaining the information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the federal agencies reject an increasingly large number of requests every year under national security exemptions;

To request the Congress of the United States of America to progress in discussing the Bill to Improve the Law of Access to Information 2014 to establish guidelines and to restrict among federal agencies the use of exemptions to deny information;
